EUReCA Registrations Are Open

Student registrations are open for the Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement (EUReCA), an annual event that showcases research and creative activities by currently enrolled undergraduate students in collaboration with a UT faculty mentor. The year’s event will take place April 13–15, 2015 in Hodges Library and the UC Auditorium. Judging will take place on April 13 and the awards ceremony on April 14. The exhibits will be available for viewing April 14–15 on the first and second floors of the library. Multiple cash prizes are awarded within each college.

Dr. Edwin Burdette

Engineering Icon Burdette Has Professorship Named in Honor

An iconic member of the College of Engineering received a high honor recently as the Dr. Edwin G. Burdette Professorship Endowment was announced. UT alumni Charley and Lynn Hodges established the endowment in honor of Burdette’s service and commitment to UT, in particular the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and its students. Burdette has been in the department for over fifty years.

Hines Receives SEC Award

Dr. J. Wesley Hines, professor and head of the Department of Nuclear Engineering, is the recipient of the 2014-2015 Southeastern Conference (SEC) Faculty Achievement Award for the University of Tennessee. The awards honor those with outstanding records in both teaching and scholarship who serve as role models for both junior faculty and students, and have been recognized by colleagues nationally or internationally. This puts Hines in consideration for the SEC Professor of the Year Award.

UT’s Commission for Women and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity are sponsoring the Women in STEM Research Symposium on April 18, 2015, in the Carolyn P. Brown University Center. Dr. Claudia Rawn, an associate professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, will deliver the keynote address.

Dr. Mark Dean

Dean to speak in African American Trailblazer Series

Dr. Mark Dean, alumnus and professor, will speak about his experience as an African American, inventor, and engineer at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, February 26, in the Hodges Library Auditorium. Dean holds three of IBM’s original patents and is the first African American IBM Fellow. Dean is a John Fisher Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Belize
Dome-style home that will be built in Belize

Alternative Summer Break planned for Belize

An Alternative Summer Break is planned for May 11–17, in St. Ignacio, Belize. Students will help construct a sustainable home for orphans, which will eventually allow girls who have outgrown the orphanage system to support themselves. SWE General Body Meeting Scheduled
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) general body meeting will be at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, February 26, in HSS 051. Nominations for elections will occur at this meeting. If you'd like to run for an officer position, you should attend this meeting.

MSE Offers Short Course in Materials Characterization
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is offering a Materials Characterization Short Course 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Wednesday–Friday, May 6–8, 2015, in Room 307 of the Science and Engineering Research Facility (SERF). The course will feature sixteen to twenty instructors from several different organizations in East Tennessee. The objective of this course is to provide an overview of techniques for assessing the structure, composition and physical properties of materials in the solid state. Registration information »

UT has several scholarships available to returning students that recognize their outstanding contributions to campus leadership and community service. The recipients of these scholarships are chosen in the spring by a committee appointed by the Division of Student Life. Intellectual Property is Topic at Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization Meeting
Attorney Ben Cunningham will speak at a meeting of the UT Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 25, in Room 202 of the Haslam Business Building. Cunningham is an associate attorney with the Knoxville law firm of Kennerly, Montgomery & Finley, P.C. He will speak about intellectual property law. More »

Undergraduate Business Plan Competition Deadline is Feb. 27
Applications for the Undergraduate Business Plan Competition are due no later than 5:00 p.m. Friday, February 27. This competition is open to UT undergraduate students from any field of study. First, second, and third prizes of $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000, respectively, are awarded in two business categories, growth and lifestyle. TN-SCORE Offers Summer REU Program
TN-SCORETN-SCORE, a state-wide National Science Foundation EPSCoR Program, is offering summer research opportunities for Tennessee students interested in renewable energy research. The TN-SCORE Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program lasts 8–10 weeks. Summer 2015 host institutions are the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Vanderbilt University. Students will receive a $5,000 stipend and campus housing will be provided. For more information and to apply, visit the TN-SCORE website. Application deadline is March 1, 2015.

Y-12 Internships Announced
The Y-12 National Security Complex is currently recruiting for summer 2015 internship opportunities in engineering (nuclear, mechanical, electrical, civil, fire protection, chemical, and other disciplines). The internship is for the summer of 2015, starting toward the end of May until mid-August (11-12 week duration, typically). To be considered for this intern position, you must be working towards a degree in engineering; completed your sophomore year in college; have an overall grade point average of 2.8 or above; and you must be a United States Citizen. An information workshop on the AMCAS application is planned for students interested in pre-med studies at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, at HSS 123. 

VolsTeach Opportunities
VolsTeachWhat else can you do with your major? You can now receive your degree and a secondary education teaching license with VolsTeach. The VolsTeach program is available to Math and Science majors who wish to expand their career options by earning a secondary education teaching license. Given the current economy VolsTeach offers one degree with two career paths which will make you more competitive in the future job market.

Featured Student: Lila Fisher

Lila FisherOur student this week is Lila Fisher, a civil engineering major, who accepted a co-op at EMJ Corporation located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Fisher describes the department she worked in and what her main responsibilities were.

"I am working in the construction department mainly, with some estimating," she said. "My responsibilities will include assisting Project managers, Project engineers, and Estimators. It will be my responsibility to have assignments turned in promptly and completed properly. I will also need to execute all of my objectives for the term."

Fisher said that the most valuable benefit she received during her co-op assignment was, "Seeing the construction side of engineering and working with skilled people."

EF 301 – Career Services for Engineers

Planning your class schedule for Fall 2015? Don’t forget to register for EF 301 – Engineering Career Planning!

This class is offered each spring and fall semester and is taught 1:25–2:15 p.m. Mondays at Career Services, 100 Dunford Hall. This class is a perfect fit for all juniors and seniors and will equip students with the right tools to land that great job. Sophomores and graduate students may also register for the course as well. The class is offered on a one-hour satisfactory/no credit basis and is taught by Career Services Consultants for the College of Engineering, April Gonzalez or Justin Rice. Expect visits from company representatives, tips and tricks from HR Recruiters, advice on resumes, cover letters, interviewing and salary negotiation and learn the ways you can stand out and get noticed at the job fairs.

Careers in the Foreign Service

Learn about opportunities in the US State Department from Mark Powell, former Foreign Service Officer in South America. You will receive guidance and advice on careers, internships and fellowships in the field. Powell, a Diplomat in Residence, will answer questions and share insight with those interested in Foreign and Civil Service careers.

Navigating the Workplace: LGBTQ Professional Career Panel
4:00–6:00 p.m. March 11, 2015
Workshop (two hours)
University Center Shiloh Room
Students and participants will have a chance to hear from a panel of professionals about their experience being LGBTQ in the workplace. The panel represents a variety of career fields such as science, engineering, law, communications, and the helping professions. Learn how to navigate common issues that may arise, and have the opportunity to ask questions. This is an event co-sponsored by Career Services and is part of the OUTReach: LGBT & Ally Resource Center inQUEERies Series.

Multicultural Student Life
The Academic Support Unit (ASU) in Multicultural Student Life supports the academic success of students through a variety of services:

The Tutoring Program provides free tutoring to students in a variety of subject areas.

The Book Loan Program allows students to borrow up to two books free of charge. Students must return the borrowed books at the end of the semester. Applications for the Book Loan Program are at multicultural.utk.edu.

The Final Prep Sessions provide students with a quiet and comfortable environment to study for their final exams. Students have access to tutoring in a variety of subjects. The Black Cultural Center extends its hours in order to accommodate those students who wish to have additional studying time. Stress relief activities and snacks are also provided for students to aid in their studying.


The Student Success Center offers a variety of academic support.

Academic Coaching: A one-one-one meeting with a trained GTA who can help with time management, goal setting, and more. Call 865-976-6641 to make an appointment or stop by 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday–Friday, third floor of Greve Hall.

Supplemental Instruction: Out of class study sessions with trained student SI Leaders. No appointment necessary. Please see the schedule for details.

Tutoring: Drop in or by appointment sessions available. Students can check the schedule for details. More tutoring options may be available through the SSC. Contact SSC if you are in need of tutoring for a subject not currently listed on the website.
