WomEngineers Day

WomEngineer's Day Registration Is Open

Leadership in the workplace, financial management techniques, and finding a work-life balance are a few of the topics on the docket for attendees of WomEngineers Day, planned for April 11 at the Knoxville Convention Center. Registration is now open (the conference will be limited to the first 500 to register, due to space). Organizers aim to bring together people interested or involved in engineering and other STEM—science, technology, engineering, and math—fields of study. And don’t let the name fool you: Organizers feel that one of the keys to a more welcoming, inclusive environment is bringing men and women together, thus the conference is open to all.

Featured Student: Saumya Shah

Saumya ShahOur student this week is Saumya Shah, a mechanical engineering major who accepted a co-op at John Deere Power Products, located in Greeneville, Tennessee.

Shah describes the department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.

"I worked in the Text support and the ME departments," he said. "I worked mainly on plant and production line layouts, and on other small projects such as, assisting in the 2015 model year build, relocating welding parts to other locations and optimizing space. I gained experience working on the production line for the first couple of weeks to get to know the process of the build."

A challenge that Shah had to overcome on this assignment was to optimize the space for new parts to be placed at a specific location.

"I completed a drawing in CAD with dimension of the available space," he said. "Then I drew a footprint of the parts and placed the parts in the available space to decide which orientation would optimize the space most."

Shah tells us that receiving a real hands on opportunity working on assembly and other mechanical parts of building tractors was the most beneficial aspect of the assignment.

Shah enjoyed, "Gaining valuable CAD experience, exposure to other 3D software, and having the opportunity to gain experience working a production line."

Students, please note: If you receive a co-op or internship offer, please contact Engineering Professional Practice for help with paperwork and any preparations you may need – [log in to unmask], 865-974-5323, or 310 Perkins Hall.

Employer Networking Sessions/Events

Enterprise Integration Networking Session
4:00–5:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2015
University Center Room 221

Enterprise Integration is revolutionizing the IT industry by developing software robots to automate many mundane IT tasks currently performed by IT staff. The industry has historically been siloed with engineers specializing in specific domains (desktop, network, security, or servers), but many problems span these silos and the maximum value of automation can only be realized by solving problems in a system-wide mindset.

Come find out more about Enterprise Integration and the future of IT at this Employer Information Session. If you want to keep learning from experts in each IT domain, we want you! You'll meet some of EI's Senior Leaders and technology experts and have the opportunity to openly discuss the future of IT, both the industry itself and at EI.
