Position Announcement:

 

Youth Services Librarian – 20 to 40 hours per week

 

The Position:

Under direction of Youth Services Librarian and in cooperation with Library Technicians:

Provide excellent customer service from the children’s reference desk at the Central Library: Welcome families to the children’s area and facilitate safe behavior; Use Library catalog and other online tools to locate materials for children and teens to support recreational reading, homework and/or research assignments; Respond to inquiries from the public.

 

Coordinate and assist with a wide variety of Library programming for children in collaboration with youth services staff, including: Early literacy programs, traditional and bilingual storytimes, school tours, Summer Reading Program, Family events, Homework Help and Family Literacy. Propose new programming in response to community aspirations and in collaboration with youth staff. Offer solutions when youth programming needs additional resources or affects Youth Outreach, Reference or Patron Services Department procedures.

 

Coordinate promotion of library services and resources through print and visual/audio media, social media and the Library website; prepare informational handouts for public distribution including calendars and flyers.

Assist with collection development for youth: Suggest titles for purchase using professional journals and relying on patron suggestions and popular media; identify underused sections of the collection and strategize ways to highlight them with finding guides or displays; assist with weeding based on circulation reports and knowledge of current school and recreational expectations.

 

Attend and participate in professional group meetings and workshops; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of library services for children, teens and families. Apply this knowledge when developing or enhancing services in collaboration with staff who work with youth throughout the Library System.

 

May assist in supervising and coordinating volunteers and hourly staff; assist in the training of professional and non-professional staff.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

 

Ability to:

• Work in collaboration with a variety of library staff and community members

• Understand and follow oral and written instructions

• Communicate clearly and concisely orally, in writing, and using current word processing, email, and graphic publishing computer software

• Collect and maintain program statistics using spreadsheets

• Assist in program evaluation

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

 

Skills and Experience: 

Excellent customer service skills and strong organizational abilities are a must; prior experience with children in an educational and/or professional library setting is preferred; bilingual in Spanish & English highly desirable.

 

Training: Equivalent to a Masters degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in library science or a related field.

 

Environmental Conditions: 

Library environment; work closely with the public; work with computer and office equipment.

 

Physical Standards:

Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting or standing for extended periods of time; requires some bending and lift up to of 25 pounds.

 

Schedule and Compensation: 

$24.89 per hour

 

20 hours:

Tuesdays & Thursdays 9am-5pm, Fridays 8:30am-2:30pm

 

Up to 40 hours starting in mid-January:

Schedule may include weekends and evenings

 

Background check required.
