Description: Freight planning efforts have increased in recent years as federal, state, regional, and municipal transportation planners have become more aware of the impacts and benefits created by freight transportation movements.  One initiative pursued by many public sector agencies is the creation of freight advisory committees for their organizations.  Though the creation of state freight advisory committees is encouraged in MAP-21, many States and Metropolitan Planning Organizations have independently worked to create such committees, and some committees have been in existence for many years.  Most existing freight advisory committees contain a mix of public and private sector representatives among their membership, and the freight shipper, manufacturer, or retailer and freight carrier perspectives provided by private sector members in many committees helps government staff better understand the shippers’ and carriers’ freight transportation needs and the possible project and/or financial approaches to dealing with those issues.

This webinar will provide an overview of the MAP-21 provisions encouraging state freight advisory committees and the benefits of freight advisory committees in general.  It will also feature discussion about some of the activities conducted by state DOT and MPO-organized freight advisory committees.
