The NSN Board is pleased to announce the opening of an Interim Executive Director part-time position.  Applications are due Monday, December 8, 2014.

Title:               Executive Director (Interim)

Department:  Administration

Reports to:     Board Chair

Organization: National Storytelling Membership Association, dba National Storytelling Network, a 501(c)(3) corporation

Job Description         

The Interim Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of the National Storytelling Network (NSN), which has offices in Kansas City, MO and Jonesborough, TN. NSN is a nonprofit organization whose mission is bringing together and supporting individuals and organizations that use the power of story in all its forms. We advocate for the preservation and growth of the art of storytelling. The Interim Executive Director reports to the Chair of the Board of Directors, and is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives.

Minimum Requirements

1)     Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science.

2)     Certificate or degree in Nonprofit Executive Leadership, Nonprofit Management, Fund Development or extensive accomplishment and experience in a related field. CFRE certification is a plus.

3)     Minimum 3 years work experience writing, submitting and managing successful grants for nonprofit or arts organization.

4)     Minimum 2 years work experience as Executive Director for a 501(c)(3) organization preferred.

5)     Residency in the region of Kansas City, MO is preferred.

Abilities Required

1)     Work a minimum of 20 hours per month at NSN-Woodneath, 8900 NE Flintlock Road, Kansas City, MO.

2)     Grant writing and grants management.

3)     Experience with Kansas City, MO philanthropy and nonprofit funding preferred.

4)      Ability to create read and interpret financial reports, budgets and legal documents in cooperation with the Treasurer, accountant and legal advisors.

5)     Demonstrated ability to work in partnership with a board of directors.

6)     Ability to embrace change and learn on the job.

7)     Energetic, self-directed, and well organized to handle multiple tasks, select priorities, and focus on the issues that will contribute most to the growth and success of the organization.

8)     Ability to create new income streams for NSN.

9)     Strong leadership skills, including project management, change management, negotiation, problem solving, decision-making, and delegation.

10)  Ability to articulate, orally and in text, the organization’s values and programs.

11)   Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people.

12)  Ability to operate without support staff: maintain ED files, create high level presentations and reports, and other duties as required.

Salary and Benefits

FLSA Status: Exempt

1)  Salary: $35,000 annually.

2)  Hours of work required: 20 hours per week, 50 weeks, 1000 hours per year. A minimum of 1 week per month will be spent in the NSN office at Woodneath Library Branch, 8900 NE Flintlock Road, Kansas City, MO 64157-1090.     

3)  Expenses: Pre-approved travel outside of the Kansas City metro area will be reimbursed.

Key Responsibilities

1)      Write and manage grants.

2)      Create and/or maintain local and national alliances, partnerships, and collaborations with other organizations in the nonprofit, private, and public sectors that will help NSN advance its mission.

3)     Guide NSN as a national cultural organization through the 1-2 year transition to installation of permanent Executive Director

4)     Generate new revenue opportunities that support NSN’s mission.

5)     Attend quarterly board meetings.
