Our days are feeling shorter and it’s
getting dark earlier. If you are still out and about on campus as dusk falls, don’t
forget you can use safe campus transportation by riding The T to your next destination.
Familiarize yourself with the late night routes and schedules here.
Vol Tip: If you need to run to the store late at night or go pick up a
friend, try Zipcar. You can reserve self-
service cars by the hour or the day 24/7. There are two cars stationed on the corner of
Twentieth and Andy Holt Avenue near Presidential Courtyard.

Five years ago, as a US Navy petty officer
on the USS Bainbridge, Melina Gardner—now a twenty-six-year-old senior in sociology at
UT—found herself in the middle of a four-day standoff between the Navy and Somali
pirates during the now-famous rescue of the ship’s Captain Richard Phillips. Gardner now
helps other veterans in UT’s Office of Veterans Affairs. Read her story here.

The Tennessee Teaching and Learning
Center is accepting applications for its Graduate Teaching Certification Program. This
program explores current theories, practices, and application in the classroom. The
program is open to anyone who is or would be eligible to be a teaching associate at UT.
Applications are due Monday,
November 24.

Chelsie will attend football practice on
Thursday, then join the team on the sidelines for this weekend’s game against Kentucky.
Chelsie is a senior in English from Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She has served as president
of the Black Educators of Tomorrow and vice president of the Multicultural Mentoring
Program. She is a member of the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences
Dean’s Undergraduate Advisory Board.

Join Multicultural Student Life and the
UT’s NAACP for the tenth annual Black Issues Conference. The
conference will host a forum for research and discussion of issues affecting the African-
American community featuring a keynote speaker and workshops. The event takes place
from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday, February 7 in the UC.

Dunford Hall.
