Assistant Director, Reference and Education Librarian
Liaison - Morsani College of Medicine

University of South Florida - Shimberg Health Sciences Library

 

 

Responsibilities:

 

Essential Functions of Position:

·       Responsible for the leadership and administration of reference and education services. The duties include: overall planning, organizing, and staffing for the department; formulating and implementing effective reference and education programs; participating in future needs assessment for library services; assisting executive leadership in developing policies; and fostering a creative, team-oriented work environment by encouraging and promoting communication, collaboration, and excellent customer service.

Required qualifications

·       MLS/MLIS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution

·       Extensive experience in an academic health sciences or medical library

·       Minimum of 5 years of increasingly higher levels of responsibility, including strong supervisory experience

·       Substantial experience in bibliographic instruction, database searching, instructional design, and resources in a health sciences library environment

·       Knowledge of current and emerging technologies in reference and instruction

·       Ability to work in a collaborative, service oriented, rapidly changing environment to accomplish mutual goals

·       Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills

·       Ability to develop and manage budgets, plan and implement complex projects, and a record of solid management skills and creative leadership

·       Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

·       More than 5 years of increasingly higher levels of responsibility, including strong supervisory experience

·       Experience in teaching evidence-based practice literature searching and concepts

·       Experience and working knowledge of  bibliography management software applications

·       Ability to work effectively within a complex organization

Duties (60% FTE):

·       Coordinates Reference Team activities including: scheduling, technology, resources, services, special assignments, and policy and procedure development and interpretation.

·       Monitors reference trends and practices in health sciences libraries to identify and initiate best practices.

·       Collaborate with the Education Coordinator to establish policies, procedures, priorities, goals, work assignments, and special projects supporting the library’s education effort.

·       Actively participates in instructional presentations, programs, and activities.

·       Performs the range of activities covered by the department, as needed.

·       Participates in collection development activities by providing input into the identification, review, budget recommendations, and selection of resources.

·       Oversees assessment of user needs, evaluation of services, performance measures, and marketing in collaboration with the Director and library faculty.

·       Develops and implements outreach programs.

Administrative Duties (30% FTE):

·       Participates on the library Leadership Team, contributing to the continuous review and improvement of library services.  Monitors, evaluates, and reports on programs and services within reference and education and contributes to reports such as the annual report, strategic plan, and timelines in collaboration with the Leadership Team.

·       Responsible for supervision and staff development of direct reports, including recruitment, evaluations, and training.

·       Coordinates Graduate Assistant and Field Study programs for public services by developing and supervising training activities, evaluating progress, and submitting written reports to the library science program.  Understands and interprets the collective bargaining agreement as it applies to graduate students.

·       Develops and oversees librarian liaison program.

·       Develops budgets for all reference, education and outreach efforts.

Other Duties (10% FTE):

·       Serves on various internal and external committees.

·       Participates in professional development and professional organizations and events within the field of health sciences librarianship.

·       Additional or special duties as assigned.

 

Salary and Benefits
This position has faculty rank and status (non-tenure track). 
Benefits include a competitive health package, and TIAA/CREF and other retirement options. 
Salary range: $65,000 - $75,000.
