Engineers Day 2014

Engineers Day will be October 23

Engineers Day has been a UT College of Engineering tradition for more than 100 years. Undergraduate Engineering classes are dismissed for one day to allow students and faculty to spend time interacting with hundreds of potential engineering students from high schools across the region. CEE's Burdette wins top teaching honor

Dr. Ed Burdette, the Fred N. Peebles Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been named the Peter G. Hoadley Award winner for 2014. The award was given September 26 by the Tennessee Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Discovery Canada highlights work of nuclear engineering professors

The College of Engineering was recently part of a program on scientific breakthroughs thanks to Discovery Channel Canada. Dr. Howard Hall, Governor's Chair Professor, and Dr. Steven Skutnik, assistant professor, both of the Department of Nuclear Engineering, appeared on the show "Daily Planet" to talk about a prototype they've helped develop for detecting radiation. The show is in production and will air in the near future.

UT awarded $1.2 Million for traffic safety project

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention presented a competition to select a team that would lead the efforts to improve nighttime seat belt usage. UT’s team in the competition—led by Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Shashi Nambisan and CTR Transportation Research Director Jerry Everett—won, and is now being supported by the CDC with a $1.2 million grant paid over three years.

Dodds presents energy seminar in China

Dr. Lee Dodds, professor emeritus and former head of the Department of Nuclear Engineering, recently lectured in China on "Energy Choices and Consequences." His talk was based on a seminar course that he developed after his retirement from UT and now teaches in the UT Honors Program. Dodds presented first at the New Energy Forum-2014 Conference in Qingdao, where he was one of several invited keynote speakers for the opening plenary session that included three Nobel Laureates. His second presentation was to students and faculty at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU), where he was the guest of Dr. Way Kuo, President of CityU and former Dean of the UT College of Engineering.

Huang earns honors at Biomaterials Day

Lu Huang, a third-year PhD student co-advised by Dr. Wei He and Dr. Peter K. Liaw in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, won the second place for the best poster presentation award from the Sixth Annual Biomaterials Day at University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky, on September 27, 2014. Her presentation was titled "In-vitro Investigations of Biomedical Potentials of Zr-based Bulk Metallic Glasses."

Huang's poster award and Dr. Wei He's invited talk, entitled "Crafting Functional Microscale Biomaterials with Epoxy Chemistry," at this event showcased the biomaterials research at the University of Tennessee and enhanced the institutional visibility in this exciting area on a regional scale.

Denso Manufacturing representative Brian Crawford will speak on the importance of networking and how to properly do it at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, at the Black Cultural Center lounge.

ASME will tour ORNL Manufacturing Demonstration Facility

ASME ORNL MDF TourThe American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is hosting a tour of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 22, 2014. Students in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering (and engineering students in general) are welcome to attend, with some limitations. The facility is operated by the Department of Energy, and requires all names, e-mail addresses, and country of citizenship of each individual attending. ORNL requires two weeks to process visitors, so those interested must register by Monday, October 6, 2014. Send contact and citizenship information to Missy Shanken at [log in to unmask] and Clayton Greer (ASME Vice President) at [log in to unmask]. Attendance will be capped at sixty guests. Transportation will not be provided. Meet at 3:00 p.m. on October 22 outside Dougherty Engineering Building for carpool opportunities. Services available for students with educational challenges

The KLASS Center provides additional specialized and individualized services to University of Tennessee students who have been diagnosed with a variety educational disabilities, notably Autism Spectrum Disorders. These services are provided to foster growth and development in the areas of academics, social skills, and transitioning to independent adult roles.

Noonan to discuss electron-beam topics

Dr. John Noonan, senior engineer at Argonne National Laboratory, will speak on "The RF gated, field emitter cathode: An ultra-low emittance electron beam source and a cascade of applications" 3:00-4:00 p.m. Friday, October 10, in Room 416 of the Dougherty Engineering Building. The talk is presented by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Engineering Expo sets attendance records

Fall 2014 Engineering ExpoThe Fall 2014 Engineering Expo represented a milestone in attendance from both employers that attended and students that attended making this event the largest in the program's recorded history. Seventy-seven employers attended the Engineering Expo for cooperative education and internship student recruitment. The previous employer high attendance was fall of 2008 with sixty-five employers. Nearly 1,400 students interviews were scheduled for Friday, September 26, and UT engineering students are already beginning to receive offers for co-op and internship assignments for the upcoming Spring and Summer semesters.

VolsTeach

What else can you do with your major? You can now receive your degree and a secondary education teaching license with VolsTeach. The VolsTeach program is available to Math and Science majors who wish to expand their career options by earning a secondary education teaching license. Given the current economy VolsTeach offers one degree with two career paths which will make you more competitive in the future job market.

Spring 2015 Undergraduate Advising and Registration Reminders
The Spring 2015 timetable will be on MyUTK for viewing of course offerings Monday, Sept. 29.

Spring 2015 Undergraduate Registration Dates:
October 13–14 Priority registration (student athletes, Chancellor/Haslam Honors, etc)
October 20–21 Seniors (90 + hours earned)
October 27–28 Juniors (60 to 89 hours earned)
November 10–11 Sophomores (30 to 59 hours earned)
November 24–25 Freshmen (less than 30 hours earned)

Students who have completed EF 151-152 or 157-158 or Physics 135-136 or Physics 137-138 AND Math 141-142 or Math 147-148 are to meet with their faculty advisor in the major department. Contact the major department office to assistance scheduling an advising appointment with your faculty member.

Students who are first year in Engineering or still completing EF sequence or Math 141-142 are advised in the Engineering Advising Office, located in Room 202 Estabrook Hall. Students please check your UT e-mail for an invitation to schedule your advising appointment with us. The e-mail has the link embedded to use for scheduling an appointment. Currently, we are advising Priority students and EF 152/Physics 136 students. Starting October 1, e-mail invitations will go out to students taking EF 151, or Physics 135 or Math 130.

The Academic Support Unit (ASU) in Multicultural Student Life supports the academic success of students through a variety of services:

The Tutoring Program provides free tutoring to students in a variety of subject areas.

The Book Loan Program allows students to borrow up to two books free of charge. Students must return the borrowed books at the end of the semester. Applications for the Book Loan Program are at multicultural.utk.edu.

The Final Prep Sessions provide students with a quiet and comfortable environment to study for their final exams. Students have access to tutoring in a variety of subjects. The Black Cultural Center extends its hours in order to accommodate those students who wish to have additional studying time. Stress relief activities and snacks are also provided for students to aid in their studying.


The Student Success Center offers a variety of academic support.

Academic Coaching: A one-one-one meeting with a trained GTA who can help with time management, goal setting, and more. Call 865-976-6641 to make an appointment or stop by 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday–Friday, third floor of Greve Hall.

Supplemental Instruction: Out of class study sessions with trained student SI Leaders. No appointment necessary. Please see the schedule for details.

Tutoring: Drop in or by appointment sessions available. Students can check the schedule for details. More tutoring options may be available through the SSC. Contact SSC if you are in need of tutoring for a subject not currently listed on the website.
