UT Seminar: Engaging Extension: Expanding Partnerships in Pursuit of the Land Grant Mission in Wisconsin.
Greg Hutchins, Associate Vice Chancellor for the University of Wisconsin-Extension, currently leads Wisconsin's “Reimagining Extension” initiative, a planning process trying to
anticipate Extension’s work in 10 to 20 years. He also serves on the Executive Committees of two national professional groups: the Engagement Scholarship Consortium, and the Council on Engagement and Outreach of the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities.

Landscape Architecture Students, Faculty, Alumni Win State Awards for Community Improvement Projects
During the past three years, more than 100 UT students, eight UT faculty members, and community partners from five counties have worked together on eleven projects as part of this effort.
UT Extension Partnership Wins Grant to Reduce Chronic Diseases in West Tennessee
The Department for Human Health and Services has awarded a $987,000 grant to UT Extension for a combative health plan against obesity, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. "In order to
account for, and respect, the culture and context of communities," said project director Heather Wallace, assistant professor in the department of family and consumer science, we will be working with each coalition as they drive their own initiatives to improve
local health." Strategic partners in the initiative include Tennessee State University Extension and a series of community coalitions, local school districts, and county health departments.

SPOTLIGHT: 2014 Outreach Grant Winners Erin Darby and Gilya Schmidt
Working
with the Knoxville Jewish Alliance and Heska Amuna Synagogue of Knoxville, UT colleagues created an educational seminar series that crossed multi-cultural and multi-generational platforms. The seminars promoted cultural, social, intellectual and general welfare
topics concerning the local Jewish community.

SPOTLIGHT: 2014 Outreach Grant Winner Susan Groenke
Groenke
established a partnership plan between UT's Freshmen English teachers and English teachers from Knox County Schools. The collaboration builds a bridge between expectations at the university level and common core English curriculum at public schools.

In the News: Architecture Students help design Nashville's future
Led by UT urban design professor Thomas (TK) Davis, students from UTK's College of Architecture and Design are working with civic, community and professional groups in Nashville to design
what their future city will look like. Their long-term vision includes modeling for structures along the waterfront, micro-housing residencies and a new visitor center for Centennial Park.

Call for 2014-15 Proposals: UTK Community Engagement Funding
As
part of The University of Tennessee, Knoxville's commitment to community collaboration and community-engaged scholarship, the Chancellor provides special project funding for proposals that specifically enhance the public engagement mission of the university.
Proposals may be for community-engaged projects or partnerships that promote the principles of engagement as applied to research, teaching, or outreach. This program is primarily directed at faculty-led initiatives, though involvement of students is encouraged.

NERCHE: Research on Critical Issues in Advancing Community Engaged Scholarship
The
2014-15 Ernest A. Lynton Request for Proposals seeks to foster sustained and systematic investigations that will support deeper understandings of and clearer actions around critical issues in advancing community engaged scholarship. Priority is given to research
that identifies current critical challenges to advancing community engaged scholarship. The three critical research areas are: Structures of inclusion, leadership and student outcomes. Grants for up to $5,000 per project.

Broader Impacts Toolbox: Pro2Serve Math Contest display & recruiting opportunity
The 15th Annual UT/Pro2Serve Math Contest for Tennessee High School Students is a day-long event to be held Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014. Approximately 700 academically distinguished high school
students, along with a number of parents, teachers, and chaperons, will be on campus. There is some room for table displays and recruiting efforts in the UC Ballroom and the adjacent rooms during the 11a.m.-1p.m. lunch hour.

Biannual Report to Congress: Focus on Broader Participation in STEM
The Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering (CEOSE) has released its latest report to Congress, recommending that "NSF should implement a bold new initiative, focused
on broadening participation of underrepresented groups in STEM that emphasizes institutional transformation and system change...." The report explicitly calls, in effect, for an anchor institutions approach, involving higher education-school-community partnerships
as a means for broadening participation for all groups across all levels of schooling.
