UT Space Institute celebrates 50th anniversary

A quiet peninsula on the shores of a rural lake in middle Tennessee might have seemed an unlikely spot to create one of the nation’s leading science facilities in 1964. Thankfully for the university, planners were less concerned with an out-of-the-way location and more focused on out-of-this-world ideas, and the UT Space Institute (UTSI) was born. UTSI celebrates its fiftieth year this weekend.

NE department hosts its first Spring Mixer

The Department of Nuclear Engineering hosted its first Spring Mixer on Friday, September 5, at Tyson Park near the UT campus. The mixer included a cookout and short introductions of faculty and student organizations.

The goals of the mixer were to (1) allow the new freshmen to meet the faculty and get some information on potential undergraduate research opportunities; (2) Have each of the four student organizations recruit students for the upcoming year; and (3) Have the graduate and undergraduate students and faculty get to know each other. The event was a success with plenty of food, discussions, and even some Frisbee.

Featured Student: Jordan Parkhurst

Jordan ParkhurstOur student this week is Jordan Parkhurst, a chemical engineering major who accepted a co-op at MARS Petcare, located in Franklin, Tennessee.

Parkhurst describes the department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.

"I worked as a Global Applied Science Technology (GAST) intern, at the STARS facility for Mars Petcare," said Parkhurst. "My responsibilities included preparation each day for the project at hand, executing mass balance calculations, automating and implementing automation for our large design experiment, extrusion work including extrusion theory and extrusion rheology, extrusion kibble trials, as well as helping at a larger Mars plant with one of the current R&D trials."

Parkhurst found that he loved working in R&D.

"I didn't expect to like it honestly, but learning this portion of the business has been very insightful, hard work, and fun," he said. "I worked around a lot of very intelligent people, and learned a lot from them. I hope I get to return here as a permanent associate!"

The most valuable benefit Parkhurst received during his co-op assignment was the experience, as well as getting to know the people of Mars and learning their work culture.

"You can only learn so much from school, but the bulk of what it takes to be something like an engineer is learning from experience," he said. "I work alongside many folks with a lot of experience that they're happy to share with me, and that's a priceless benefit!"

Students, please note: If you receive a co-op or internship offer, please contact Engineering Professional Practice for help with paperwork and any preparations you may need – [log in to unmask], 865-974-5323, or 310 Perkins Hall.

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking "Resource Library" (on the left margin) and selecting "Students at Work–In Their Own Words." For information on engineering co-op and internships, contact [log in to unmask] or 865-974-5323.
