Icove presents at fire investigation symposium

Dr. Dave Icove, PE, UL Professor of Practice, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, presented four papers this week at the University of Maryland's International Symposium on Fire Investigation, College Park, Maryland. One of the papers highlighted his work on the study of high voltage electric arc phenomena.

CEE student made self-guided academic enrichment trip in summer 2014

Joseph Amagliani, a senior in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), traveled abroad in summer 2014 on an academic enrichment trip designed to supplement his studies. Amagliani, whose interest lies in transportation engineering, gained new perspective on alternative ways to move both people and goods as he visited five countries and several world class cities including Amsterdam, Paris, and London.

Nguyen wins Best Student Paper at SMASIS

Biomedical engineering PhD student MaryAnne Nguyen won a Best Student Paper award in the Bioinspired Smart Materials Symposium at last week’s ASME Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures, and Intelligent Systems (SMASIS) Conference in Newport, Rhode Island.

Nguyen works in the Bioinspired Materials and Transduction Laboratory that is directed by Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering (MABE) Assistant Professor Dr. Andy Sarles.

COE students, faculty invited to hear Los Alamos director speak

The Howard H. Baker Center for Public Policy at UT will host Charles McMillan, the director of Los Alamos National Laboratory, at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1, in the Baker Center's Toyota Auditorium, as part of its ongoing lecture series. McMillan's presentation, "The Timeline of Technology," will focus on how technology, scientists, engineers, and researchers can help officials make better decisions when it comes to policies. He is the tenth director for Los Alamos, having taken the position in June 2011.

Visiting professor will speak on ion beam bombardment

Dr. Wei-Kan Chu, professor in the Department of Physics and Center for Superconductivity at the University of Houston, will speak on "Surface Ripple Formation by Cluster Ian Beam Bombardment and Applications" at 3:00 p.m. Friday, October 3, in Room 416 of the Dougherty Engineering Building. The seminar is presented by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE).

Eastman seeks engineering students for internships

EastmanUT's TN-SCORE office and the Eastman Chemical Company have openings in an internship program that offers hands-on technical work experience in the chemical manufacturing industry. Participating in Eastman’s Internship Program can be a stepping-stone to full-time employment with the company after graduation.

The program is interested in the best and brightest chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineering major undergraduate students. VolsTeach

Spring 2015 Undergraduate Advising and Registration Reminders
The Spring 2015 timetable will be on MyUTK for viewing of course offerings Monday, Sept. 29.

Spring 2015 Undergraduate Registration Dates:
October 13–14 Priority registration (student athletes, Chancellor/Haslam Honors, etc)
October 20–21 Seniors (90 + hours earned)
October 27–28 Juniors (60 to 89 hours earned)
November 10–11 Sophomores (30 to 59 hours earned)
November 24–25 Freshmen (less than 30 hours earned)

Students who have completed EF 151-152 or 157-158 or Physics 135-136 or Physics 137-138 AND Math 141-142 or Math 147-148 are to meet with their faculty advisor in the major department. Contact the major department office to assistance scheduling an advising appointment with your faculty member.

Students who are first year in Engineering or still completing EF sequence or Math 141-142 are advised in the Engineering Advising Office, located in Room 202 Estabrook Hall. Students please check your UT e-mail for an invitation to schedule your advising appointment with us. The e-mail has the link embedded to use for scheduling an appointment. Currently, we are advising Priority students and EF 152/Physics 136 students. Starting October 1, e-mail invitations will go out to students taking EF 151, or Physics 135 or Math 130.

The Academic Support Unit (ASU) in Multicultural Student Life supports the academic success of students through a variety of services:

The Tutoring Program provides free tutoring to students in a variety of subject areas.

The Book Loan Program allows students to borrow up to two books free of charge. Students must return the borrowed books at the end of the semester. Applications for the Book Loan Program are at multicultural.utk.edu.

The Final Prep Sessions provide students with a quiet and comfortable environment to study for their final exams. Students have access to tutoring in a variety of subjects. The Black Cultural Center extends its hours in order to accommodate those students who wish to have additional studying time. Stress relief activities and snacks are also provided for students to aid in their studying.


The Student Success Center offers a variety of academic support.

Academic Coaching: A one-one-one meeting with a trained GTA who can help with time management, goal setting, and more. Call 865-976-6641 to make an appointment or stop by 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday–Friday, third floor of Greve Hall.

Supplemental Instruction: Out of class study sessions with trained student SI Leaders. No appointment necessary. Please see the schedule for details.

Tutoring: Drop in or by appointment sessions available. Students can check the schedule for details. More tutoring options may be available through the SSC. Contact SSC if you are in need of tutoring for a subject not currently listed on the website.
