COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT NEWS & OPPORTUNITIES

Community Engaged Learning in Appalachia

[cid:[log in to unmask]]The Appalachia Community Health and Disaster Readiness Project, led by the UT Global Disaster Nursing graduate program, is working with students in the field to help small towns prepare for disaster readiness. "Interacting with public officials was a great experience for students because it gave them a sense of how real this is," said John Schwartz, associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering. Students had the opportunity to work closely with Clay County officials and toured the community's existing dam to understand water supply issues. When the Appalachia Project concludes, participants anticipate results that will include a strong disaster preparedness plan, improved homes, clean water access and septic solutions, and, a safer, healthier community.

The University of Tennessee celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month 2014 by inviting a group of Latino artists, some of them residents of Tennessee, for an art exhibit to be held during the month of September at the Black Cultural Center, featuring artists from Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity is sponsoring this event as part of its engagement with the Latino community. Sourced by Rickey Hall, Vice Chancellor for Diversity.

UT to Receive Purple Heart Designation

UT becomes one of six Purple Heart-designated universities in the country. This designation not only honors veterans within the community, but establishes UT as the first university in the state to receive the designation. As part of the designation ceremonies at last week's UT vs Arkansas game, fans wrote messages of appreciation on an eight by twenty-four foot banner that read "Thank You Military" and included logos of the five branches of military service.
