COE students help print drivable 3D car

UT engineering students Kyle Goodrick, Andrew Messing, Aaron Young, and Alex Roschl were part of a joint effort by UT, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Local Motors, Cincinnati Incorporated, and Oak Ridge Associated Universities to print a working, drivable car during the International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago. The four are students in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, with Goodrick and Roschli being electrical engineering majors, while Messing and Young are computer science majors.

COE receives $37 million grant from Siemens PLM Software

SiemensUT has received an in-kind software grant from Siemens PLM Software, estimated at $37 million, for use in the College of Engineering. The grant gives students access to the same technology used by automotive manufacturers, aerospace developers, and high-tech electronics companies.

Dr. Haixuan Xu

DOE program funding UT-led alloy research

An international research team led by Dr. Haixuan Xu, an assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has received a US Department of Energy (DOE) grant to help with work involving a key component of nuclear reactors. The grant, worth $800,000 over three years, comes as part of the Nuclear Energy University Programs (NEUP) funding, and will be used to work on a pair of particular steel alloys.

COE study abroad plans international courses for 2015

ChinaThe College of Engineering (COE) will sponsor five faculty-led engineering study abroad programs for the summer of 2015. Course trips are once again planned for London, England; Dublin, Ireland; Innsbruck, Austria; and Prague, Czech Republic.

New for 2015 is "Global Engineering Economic Analysis", taught in Hangzhou, China.

CBE student Nick McNutt featured by ORNL

The research of Nick McNutt, a PhD student in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering (CBE), was recently highlighted on the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) website. McNutt is co-advised by Dr. Orlando Rios at ORNL and Dr. David Keffer, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Matthew Marsh receives Coryell Award

UT senior Matthew Marsh received the 2014 Charles D. Coryell Award in Nuclear Chemistry for undergraduate research from the American Chemical Society’s Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology. Marsh is a major in radiochemistry who works with Dr. Howard Hall, Governor's Chair Professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering.

The Materials Research Society (MRS) will meet at 4:30 p.m. Monday, September 22, in Room 501 of Ferris Hall.

SHPE hosts 'So You Think You Can Interview?'

SHPEThe Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) will present an interview practice event 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 23, in the Executive Dining Room at the University Center.

Practice interviewing skills with a real company recruiter. Students will go through a twenty-minute mock interview where they will receive feedback on how to improve their interviewing skills. It is a great opportunity to talk one-on-one with a recruiter.

All engineering majors are invited, especially electrical engineering and computer science. Companies attending: ExxonMobil, Schneider Electric, and Cisco. Attire is business casual.

SWE hosts 'Evening with Industry'

Evening With Industry (EWI) is a networking dinner hosted for students and companies by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 24 (the night before the Engineering Expo). Companies attending include DENSO, Shaw Floors, ConAgra Foods, Norfolk Southern, MAHLE, BorgWarner, and ExxonMobil. This is a great opportunity for students to talk to company representatives and increase their chances of getting a co-op or internship. Registration form >>

Eastman seeks engineering students for internships

EastmanUT's TN-SCORE office and the Eastman Chemical Company have openings in an internship program that offers hands-on technical work experience in the chemical manufacturing industry. Participating in Eastman’s Internship Program can be a stepping-stone to full-time employment with the company after graduation.

The program is interested in the best and brightest chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineering major undergraduate students. Congressional Internship applications now available

UT Congressional InternshipThe Congressional Internship Program is a scholarship and nomination program designed to enhance students’ opportunities to work with Tennessee’s Legislators in Washington, D.C. Students who are selected to participate will be nominated for an internship (final selections and agreements are determined by individual offices and nominees) and awarded a scholarship to offset costs of living in Washington D.C. for the duration of the internship. Students can apply online at leadershipandservice.utk.edu/connected_cip.php.
The deadline to apply is October 3, 2014.

Call for submissions open for Pursuit

Pursuit: The Journal of Undergraduate Research at the University of Tennessee is accepting submissions for its sixth volume, to be published April 2015. Pursuit is dedicated to publishing the scholarly work of undergraduates and is supported by the University of Tennessee Office of Research and Engagement and the Chancellor’s Honors Program. The editors and review board are undergraduate students who review submissions and work with select faculty and staff to publish Pursuit. The priority deadline for submissions is October 23, 2014. Doug Taylor, assistant dean of admissions at ETSU Quillen College of Medicine, will be on the UT campus 12:30–5:00 p.m. Thursday, September 25, in Room 220 of the University Center to talk to pre-med students. The Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization will host a talk by Brandon Bruce at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 24, in Room 102 of the Haslam Business Building. Brandon is the co-founder and COO of Cirruspath. The company specializes in making apps that integrate Salesforce with your email inbox. Pizza and drinks will be provided. Spring 2015 Undergraduate Advising and Registration Reminders
The Spring 2015 timetable will be on MyUTK for viewing of course offerings Monday, Sept. 29.

Spring 2015 Undergraduate Registration Dates:
October 13–14 Priority registration (student athletes, Chancellor/Haslam Honors, etc)
October 20–21 Seniors (90 + hours earned)
October 27–28 Juniors (60 to 89 hours earned)
November 10–11 Sophomores (30 to 59 hours earned)
November 24–25 Freshmen (less than 30 hours earned)

Students who have completed EF 151-152 or 157-158 or Physics 135-136 or Physics 137-138 AND Math 141-142 or Math 147-148 are to meet with their faculty advisor in the major department. Contact the major department office to assistance scheduling an advising appointment with your faculty member.

Students who are first year in Engineering or still completing EF sequence or Math 141-142 are advised in the Engineering Advising Office, located in Room 202 Estabrook Hall. Students please check your UT e-mail for an invitation to schedule your advising appointment with us. The e-mail has the link embedded to use for scheduling an appointment. Currently, we are advising Priority students and EF 152/Physics 136 students. Starting October 1, e-mail invitations will go out to students taking EF 151, or Physics 135 or Math 130.

The Academic Support Unit (ASU) in Multicultural Student Life supports the academic success of students through a variety of services:

The Tutoring Program provides free tutoring to students in a variety of subject areas.

The Book Loan Program allows students to borrow up to two books free of charge. Students must return the borrowed books at the end of the semester. Applications for the Book Loan Program are at multicultural.utk.edu.

The Final Prep Sessions provide students with a quiet and comfortable environment to study for their final exams. Students have access to tutoring in a variety of subjects. The Black Cultural Center extends its hours in order to accommodate those students who wish to have additional studying time. Stress relief activities and snacks are also provided for students to aid in their studying.


The Student Success Center offers a variety of academic support.

Academic Coaching: A one-one-one meeting with a trained GTA who can help with time management, goal setting, and more. Call 865-976-6641 to make an appointment or stop by 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday–Friday, third floor of Greve Hall.

Supplemental Instruction: Out of class study sessions with trained student SI Leaders. No appointment necessary. Please see the schedule for details.
