Overview:

The Assistant Director serves as an innovative leader within the library and the community and is an information advocate and forward thinker who inspires learning, discovery and the development of 21st century skills in staff, volunteers, and the community.  The position oversees and provides a variety of programming, content selection and creation, and direct patron service.  The Assistant Director inspires continued learning, collaboration, skill development, and advocates for the library. The Assistant Director also performs professional level work and provides leadership and direct supervision to staff in one or more specialized aspects of library operations. This person leads in the development and implementation of new and/or enhanced services.

Responsibilities:
  • Perform daily duties in a manner consistent with the Library’s mission, goals, and objectives and provide and model exceptional customer service.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive, harmonious, professional, and effective working relationships.
  • Assist the library in meeting diverse community needs, exposing and encouraging use of collections and resources to the community and continually learning, applying and teaching new technologies.
  • Identify, plan and oversee projects including grants and technology support.
  • Manage, create and/or deliver exceptional programming and educational opportunities within the library and through community outreach.
  • Communicate and implement library and company policies and procedures and serve as “In-Charge” manager as assigned.
  • Assist in the management of the library collection, including acquisition and circulation activity and budget levels. 
  • Provide in-depth reference and readers’ advisory service to patrons; plan special displays, activities and programs and coordinate implementation of department activities.
Qualifications:
  • MLS, MLIS required
  • Two years of progressively responsible library experience, including at least one year of supervisory responsibilities
  • Extensive knowledge of current trends in library services and materials
  • A working knowledge of computer applications for library services
  • Strong interpersonal skills including excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, associates, and the general public
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team to produce positive outcomes
  • Committed to excellence in customer service
  • Public library supervisory experience preferred
  • Background check required
