Duties & Responsibilities

Acting as an assistant to the Harvard Film Archive Director and HFA Film Curator, this position works on HFA Special Collections while also providing research and administrative support to the HFA Cinematheque. Charged with answering research inquiries about HFA Special Collections, including inquiries related to Harvard courses, the Harvard Film Archive Assistant Curator works to ensure full access to HFA Special Collections through the creation of Finding Aids and the on-line promotion of the HFA’s holdings. In addition, the Assistant Curator also helps with the research and execution of HFA Cinematheque programs.  This new position will dramatically enhance the HFA's ability to process and make available to researchers and classes special collections.  Will need to work occasional evening and weekend hours.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 

  • Works with visiting researchers, scholars- including Harvard instructors and students- to coordinate their schedules and access to film and non-film special collections both at the HFA Conservation Center at 625 Massachusetts Avenue and the Fine Arts Library Reading Room.  
  • Researches and creates Finding Aids for HFA Special Collections 
  • Under the supervision of the HFA Director helps strategize and supervise general access of HFA Special Collections and collaboration in this area with other cinema-related collections across Harvard 
  • Researches HFA Cinematheque programs under the supervision of the HFA Film Curator and Director 
  • Under the supervision of the HFA Film Curator, assists with the realization of HFA Cinematheque special events, overseeing general administrative and logistical duties, including the coordination of the schedules of HFA ushers and theater managers. 
  • Writes program notes for the HFA printed and on-line calendar 
  • Answers email, telephone and in person research inquiries about HFA Special Collections 
  • Prepares Annual Reports 
  • Other duties may be assigned

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:   
  • Will coordinate the schedules of HFA ushers and theater managers.

Basic Qualifications

 

  • MA/MS required 
  • Subject knowledge of film, film history and cinema 
  • Strong writing and administrative skills and experience are also required

Additional Qualifications

 

  • Fluency or near fluency in at least one foreign language is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and diplomatically with artists and commercial vendors.
  • Ability to think creatively.
  • Passion for cinema
  • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours
