Paddison named first Gibson Chair

UT’s commitment to energy is getting a major boost from the Gibson Family Foundation, courtesy of a $1.5 million endowment. The Gibson Endowed Chair in Engineering was created with the specific goal of expanding research into environmentally friendly, sustainable energy, with Stephen Paddison, professor and Ferguson Fellow in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, named as the first chair.

First new residence hall in forty-five years opens next week

Fred D. Brown Jr. Residence HallThe Fred D. Brown Jr. Residence Hall, the first residence hall built in forty-five years at UT, will open its doors next week to about 700 undergraduate students. The hall was named in honor of Fred D. Brown Jr., a longtime UT staff member who created the Office of Diversity Programs in the College of Engineering.

Bazing winnersSysters: Women in EECS @ UTK (Systers) will host their second annual Bazinga! EECS building party beginning at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2014, in the Min Kao Building to welcome students back for the fall semester. Systers members invite all interested and curious parties to this event. At Bazinga, students can learn more about electrical engineering, enjoy a free lunch, play games, win prizes, and learn about potential employers.

A new TRIBUTE hashtag campaign, #IAmUT, launched this month to feature UT employees and the many ways they are making a difference on behalf of the university. UT President Joe DiPietro demonstrates the type of sharing one can do on his own Twitter page. Use the #IAmUT hashtag on Facebook or Twitter to share something unique about yourself or your work so DiPietro and others can thank you for all you’re doing on behalf of UT.

Fifth edition of Air Quality textbook released in August

The fifth edition of the textbook Air Quality will be released August 28, 2014. The book is co-authored by COE Dean Dr. Wayne Davis and Dr. Joshua Fu of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE). The new edition includes updated graphics, images, and information on topics such as global warming, global dimming, and more.

Lawrence Townsend
Dr. Lawrence Townsend

Townsend honored at ANS meeting

Dr. Lawrence Townsend, the Robert M. Condra Professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering (NE), received the Professional Achievement Award from the American Nuclear Society (ANS) at the society's annual meeting in Reno Nevada this summer. Townsend won the award for research activities, including extensive publications in radiation protection dosimetry and particle transport methods related to space radiation environments.

Several nuclear engineering students won awards and multiple faculty members made or took part in presentations.

Dareing will teach drilling technology course

Dr. Don W. Dareing, professor emeritus in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering (MABE), will teach Basic Drilling Technology, ME 494, on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the fall 2014 semester. The course will emphasize the language of the oil industry as well as the linkage between classroom material and oil-well drilling. It will be helpful in preparing students for interviews with companies associated with the oil and gas industry.

Dr. Shashi Nambisan, a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), was recently honored as the Quest Scholar of the Week in recognition of being elected President of the Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC).

UT, COE join effort to help Mississippi

UT and institutions from twelve other states have formed the Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Hypoxia Task Force with the aim of reducing pollution and runoff and returning vitality to North America's greatest river.

"We're trying to understand some of the dynamics involved in how we got here, what can be done and what we should stop doing, all while realizing that you have factors like farming and shipping to consider," said Dr. Thanos Papanicolaou, the Henry Goodrich Chair of Excellence in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE).

Filling up could cost less thanks to UT-ORNL breakthrough

Research conducted by Dr. Michael Hu and team could help lower costs at the gas pump in the future. Hu is a joint faculty member of the UT Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBE) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The breakthrough technology combines nanotextured pores with superhydrophobic or superhydrophillic—or, super water-repulsing and water-attracting—substances.

UT students tour Corvette facility in Kentucky

Sierra Ellis and Jasmine Worlds, students in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering, recently joined fellow members of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) in Bowling Green, Kentucky, for the GM-NSBE Chevrolet Corvette Experience Tour. The Corvette assembly plant visit gave students a chance to see what a career in engineering could lead to.

Yang Tong receives Acta Student Award

Scripta MaterialiaYang Tong, a graduate student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has received the prestigious Acta Student Award for 2013. This award honors the best student contribution to Scripta Materialia in 2013. The competition is very tough for this award, and only best papers are chosen. Tong also contributed to Acta Materialia in 2013. Both Scripta and Acta are high impact journals. Tong's contribution to Scripta has gained a lot of attention in the metallic glass community and has been very popular on the Elsevier website.

Isaac Kim
Dr. Iltai "Isaac" Kim

Kim joins Texas A&M for mechanical engineering

Dr. Iltai "Isaac" Kim, a 2008 doctoral graduate in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering, recently joined Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) as a tenure-track assistant professor in mechanical engineering. Since graduating from UT, Isaac has been a postdoctoral fellow at Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago and at Sandia National Laboratory in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

VolsTeach

What else can you do with your major? You can now receive your degree and a secondary education teaching license with VolsTeach. The VolsTeach program is available to Math and Science majors who wish to expand their career options by earning a secondary education teaching license. EF 301— Career Services for Engineers
Planning your class schedule for Fall 2014? Don’t forget to register for EF 301 – Engineering Career Planning!

This class is offered each Spring and Fall semester and is taught 1:25–2:15 p.m. Mondays at Career Services, 100 Dunford Hall. This class is a perfect fit for all Juniors and Seniors and will equip students with the right tools to land that great job. Sophomores and Graduate Students may also register for the course as well. The class is offered on a 1-hour Satisfactory/No Credit basis and is taught by Career Services Consultant for the College of Engineering, April Gonzalez/Justin Rice. Expect visits from company representatives, tips and tricks from HR Recruiters, advice on resumes, cover letters, interviewing and salary negotiation and learn the ways you can stand out and get noticed at the job fairs.
