Exempt Position Vacancy at the University of Tennessee at Martin

 

Position:  Assistant Director, Office of University Relations

Description:  The Assistant Director of University Relations works directly with the University Chancellor, University Relations Director, University Relations staff and leadership from campus and system offices; and with local, state and national media in using effective media relations planning and procedures to build a clear and positive image of UT Martin with key constituents. This position performs extensive news and feature writing, in addition to managerial responsibilities.

 

 Responsibilities:

Manage editorial content of Campus Scene alumni magazine:

Coordinate with publications coordinator for issue planning, editorial and graphic content development; coordination of internal and external writing resources; printing/production sources and schedule; and multimedia online version of magazine.

 

Supervise photographer and contributing writers:

Assign work duties, coordinate as resource for researching/writing printed and online material, conduct performance reviews.

 

Day-to-day contact and interface for media access to Chancellor’s Office, UT Martin faculty, staff and students.

 

Responsible for University compliance with current law on distribution of public notice of meetings and access to publicly available information.

 

Write news stories and features and manage local, state, national media inquiries as one of two primary media contact staff members.

 

Research and write for various University-produced annual reports and publications.

 

Manage the Chancellor’s Annual Report and Addenda faculty/staff newsletter.

 

Implement long-range planning strategies.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or a related field and four to five years proven experience in news media/print journalism, public relations, communications or related field. Excellent news and feature writing skills are required.

 

Preferred:

Master’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or a related field.

Proven experience placing stories in national, regional and local media.

Proven record of successfully cultivating effective relationships with media.

Proven news judgment.

Proven knowledge of issues management.

Pay Grade 41 - Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience – minimum hire rate of $35,172.80
