REQUIRED: B.S./B.A. in computer science, human-computer interaction, or the equivalent in education and experience; 4-6 years demonstrated experience in designing, developing, and maintaining web-based applications and complex web sites; ability to work with minimal supervision; proficiency developing in Javascript, PHP and MySQL, coding to contemporary web standards (HTML5, CSS, etc.) and working with jQuery and similar libraries and frameworks; competency with software version control. A strong customer-focused orientation and a passion for problem solving are keys to success in this position.

 

PREFERRED: Experience with Drupal CMS; strong knowledge of XML and XSLT; experience with at least one other programming/scripting language (e.g., Ruby, Python, Perl). Knowledge of digital library concepts and practices, and intellectual curiosity are highly valued.

Overview of the position:

 

The Reference Librarian assists in developing and maintaining the electronic collection, provides reference and instructional services, and develops and maintains online learning resources including the Lam Library website, online course and subject guides, and the University’s Learning Management System tutorials and portals. Works with E-Resource and Acquisitions Librarian (ERAL) and Technical services staff to coordinate subscriptions to electronic resources of the Lam Library, liaising with vendors,  and Sauder School.  Provides research support for business research and data services. Works collaboratively with other subject librarians to deliver statistical and numeric data services.

 

Qualifications:

A graduate degree (MLS) in Library Science is required.  A degree in commerce and business administration or experience in a business library is preferred.  Strong oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills are essential.  Strong computer skills, familiarity with online resources, and Web design skills including knowledge of html are required.  Familiarity with the UBC Library system is useful. Extensive knowledge of business and financial resources in all formats, and of the research process in business disciplines is desirable.

 

Working relationships:

Reports to the Head of the David Lam Management Research Library. Works with faculty, staff and students at the Sauder School of Business and elsewhere at UBC.

This position will be filled as a full time ongoing position. There will be an initial three-year probationary appointment.  Normally, such an appointment is reviewed by the end of the second year of appointment, and a recommendation is made at that time to grant or not to grant a confirmed appointment.

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:

 

The David Lam Management Research Library provides reference, information, bibliographic and circulation services in support of undergraduates, graduate students and faculty of the Sauder School of Business and to others.  The Head is responsible for providing the leadership necessary to develop facilities, collections, and programs including the organization, administration, and operation of services.  Within the context of a changing environment, the Head will facilitate the planning for and implementation of a service model which focuses on meeting user needs by the provision of information, consulting services, and instructional programs delivered by reference and other library staff.

In addition to the David Lam Library, the Head also retains responsibility for co-curricular services and programs delivered by the Canaccord Learning Commons and the Wayne Deans Investment Analysis Centre. These include support for writing, first-year math, equipment lending, digital media studio, a speaker series, academic support services, and training on finance and accounting databases, datasets and tools.

The nature and scope of responsibilities for this and other library positions are expected to change as the Library organization evolves and financial restraint continues.

 

qualifications:

 

A graduate degree from an accredited program in Library or Information Science and an academic background in commerce and business administration or equivalent knowledge gained through professional experience in these subject areas is required.  Demonstrated effective managerial experience including supervising a staff of librarians, support staff and studentworkers. Proven leadership and experience with projects, budget management and planning; and significant collaborations within a network of internal and external partnerships. Relevant professional experience, familiarity with business information sources, faculty-library liaison, electronic services, collection development and library instruction as well as commitment to responsive and innovative information services are essential. Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, ability to lead change and collaboration with librarian and faculty colleagues. 

 

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Head of the David Lam Library works under the general direction of and reports within the portfolio of the Associate University Librarian - Research Services. The Head works closely with the Senior Associate Dean, Faculty and Research, Sauder School of Business particularly on budget matters and the initiation of new programs The Head supervises a team of liaison librarians, manager of the Canaccord Learning Commons, co-ordinator of the Sauder Investment Analysis Centre, and support staff. The Head consults with the Associate University Librarian Collections Management concerning purchases of Library materials and collections building, the Head, the Director of Finance and Facilities for financial and facilities matters, and the Director, Human Resources on matters relating to staff.  The Head will be responsible for the organization and operation of services within the parameters of the Library’s operational needs as determined by the Associate University Librarian.  This position collaborates extensively with the librarians and staff from other units within the Library, staff and faculty members at the Sauder School, as well as other stakeholders at UBC.   1. Develops and implements goals and objectives that support the UBC Library’s strategic plan.
  2. Provides leadership for the librarians, M&P and CUPE staff in David Lam Library and Canaccord Learning Commons.
  3. Assesses needs of library users and opportunities for new services by consulting with users; keeping up with changes in curriculum, program development and new areas of research, maintains strong relationships with key stakeholders.  Ensures consultation with the Library on new/changed courses and curriculum.
  4. Prepares and monitors budgets, allocates and is accountable for the use of resources.  This includes setting unit priorities in consultation with staff and users.
  5. Works closely with the AUL and Director, Human Resources, on personnel issues, including recruitment of new staff and staff development and training.  Manages the performance review cycle for staff, including the development and review of job descriptions, annual setting of goals and objectives and conducting annual reviews.
  6. Oversees the development of collections ensuring that faculty and students are consulted on a regular basis.  Ensures that librarians consult with interested faculty about collection development, including participation in the Sauder School’s data committee.
  7. In consultation with users and Central Technical Services oversees the management of the physical collections in the David Lam Library including the development of criteria for the transfer of materials to storage and weeding.

8.       Creates and maintains a supportive, positive and effective work environment for staff and users, creating an environment within The David Lam Library that is collegial and based on mutual trust and respect.

  1. Supports the University Librarian and the Sauder School of Business in fund raising initiatives and participates in the preparation of grant requests and administration of grants.
  2. Participates in professional and university wide initiatives.
  3. Participates in and supports the collaborative work of the UBC public service branches.

Work Schedule:  Monday – Friday 9AM – 6PM. 

 

Lead training coordinator and manager of Information, Reference & Referral processes; designing,

developing, maintaining and coordinating training, in collaboration with others, for all Access and

Information Services (AIS) staff and student employees, requiring a high degree of computer/digital

fluency in using instructional/training software. Responsible for reference performance oversight and

feedback to staff; provides courteous customer service, information, reference and technology

assistance; and coordinates the work of and supervises student employees working at AIS service sites. 

Works 24/5 and weekends in an environment where team members are located in 4 libraries across

campus: Main, Science-Engineering, Special Collections and Fine Arts.

 

Reference Services and Training Coordination (50%):  One of three lead coordinators and managers of library Information, Reference & Referral processes.

Includes designing training; updating, selecting appropriate delivery methods; performance oversight

and feedback to staff providing Information, Reference and Referral services. Provides leadership by

maintaining a working knowledge of issues and trends in Reference Services, training and eLearning

tools, specifically those associated with academic libraries and customer related technology.

 

Primary authority for managing and coordinating:  All student Information & Referral training including developing consistent expectations and training,

creating and maintaining training syllabus for all employees and ensuring training is easily accessible

through the AIS course management site. Assesses accuracy and effectiveness of training.

Manages LibAnswers online reference technology platform.

Manages and coordinates all virtual reference services including scheduling, reviewing transcripts for

quality and providing feedback and guidance to staff; liaisons with other Library departments, drafting,

recommending and advising on processes, products, procedures and policies.

Supports library Information, Reference & Referral working group in identifying training needs at the

program and individual level and provides learning opportunities for the AIS staff regarding reference

tools, databases and reference interview techniques.

 

Customer Service (25%):   Provides Information & Referral assistance to the campus community and general public at multiple

integrated (reference, technology and circulation via online chat and email) public service desks.

Primary reference trainer, and as such, public service desk hours are performed through on-the-job

training, shadowing and observing staff. Locates library information, resources, materials and services.

Negotiates overdue circulation accounts and answers billing and collections questions.  Troubleshoots

software, computers and other equipment.

Acts as liaison in regards to reporting criminal activity or emergency situations, building problems,

library equipment problems and reporting incidents while providing public service desk hours, and also

coordinates the work of and supervises student employees.

 

Library-wide and Department Leadership Participation (25%):  Attends library-wide meetings. Actively participates and follows-up on assignments in projects, selection

committees, meetings, discussions and training sessions or fills in for those on projects. Facilitates

meetings, makes presentations as needed, and participates in data based decision making. Utilizes

specialized software (quantitative and qualitative analysis) to demonstrate quality of work and to

continually improve customer access. Creates, maintains and updates work processes documentation. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:  Bachelor's degree AND five years related library experience; OR, Nine years
