Nuclear Engineering paper by Knoxville native earns top honor in Europe

A team from UT’s Department of Nuclear Engineering<http://engr.utk.edu/nuclear> recently took top honors for its research at the European Conference of the Prognostics and Health Management Society in Nantes, France. The group's paper, "Prognostics for Light Water Reactor Sustainability: Empirical Methods for Heat Exchanger Prognostic Lifetime Predictions,"<https://phmsociety.org/sites/phmsociety.org/files/phm_submission/2014/phmce_14_028.pdf> tackles the need to check on equipment in existing nuclear reactors as those facilities' licenses are renewed.

“This is quite an achievement for our group and will lead to additional successes as we finalize this three-year project,” said Department Head Wes Hines.

UT research team looks to urban trees with grant

A UT-led team was recently awarded a federal grant of more than $200,000 to answer a challenge issued by the US Department of Agriculture. The project, “Storm Water Goes Green: Investigating the Benefit and Health of Urban Trees in Green Infrastructure Installations,” is a multidisciplinary effort coordinated with North Carolina State University to study the impact of trees on storm water management.

UT’s Jon Hathaway, an assistant professor in the College of Engineering’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE)<http://tntoday.utk.edu/2014/07/17/trees-natures-water-filter-ut-study-hopes-prove/>, said that the team’s concept came about because little research has been done on the effect of urban trees on runoff and floodwater control.

The team also includes CEE professor Dr. John Schwartz, Dr. Jennifer Franklin of the Institute of Agriculture, and members of the North Carolina State College of Engineering. The team has also partnered with UT's Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment (ISSE).

Featured student: Graham Palmer

[Graham Palmer]Our student this week is Graham Palmer, at right, an industrial engineering major who accepted a co-op at BMW Manufacturing Company, LLC, in Greer, South Carolina.

Palmer describes the department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.

“I worked in the,TS-51 IPT (Integration Process Control); it is a German acronym," he said. "I deal with PQM points which are points that come out of Audit from Test Vehicles. The work I do includes creating a list with changes that are coming up in the need pull (build week) that should show in the vehicles. I will follow up with different Launch Planners and people in the Quality Department to get information about each part. The current way it is set up Part Numbers was not connected to these parts so it is based off of pictures and emails. This list is then used in Line Walks to go to each cage that should contain these parts to confirm they are there or get timing on when they will arrive and escalate issues."

Palmer enjoyed the valuable benefits in the experience of his co-op assignment, and in getting to live in a new area.

"It is a great company that is always trying to expand and strive to be better," he said. "I have built friendships and networked with other students that can help me down the road.”

Students, please note: If you receive a co-op or internship offer, please contact Engineering Professional Practice for help with paperwork and any preparations you may need – [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>, 865-974-5323, or 310 Perkins Hall.
