Head Librarian– Tunica County Libraries

Job Title:       Tunica County Librarian

 

            Salary, etc.    40 hours per week.  $36,000 - $43,000, depending on qualifications and experience. Paid monthly.  Benefits include major medical and participation in State retirement system.  Other benefits available.

 

Opportunity:   Seeking enthusiastic, creative, motivated MLS-degreed librarian to manage library services for two locations in Tunica County.  Tunica County is located in the northwest portion of the Mississippi Delta and has a population of 10,560.  

 

The county librarian will have the opportunity to provide library services designed to improve literacy, help make a dent in high unemployment rates and provide information needed for a healthy Mississippi.  Our strategic plan emphasizes positive community relations, cooperation with the schools and collaboration with businesses, civic groups and local government.  Our libraries provide the only free internet access for many residents.  We offer a comprehensive summer library program for youth and a collection that reflects the needs of our community. 

 

Tunica County has much to offer. It is home to nine casinos offering gaming and entertainment around the clock. Tunica has a new airport and museum. There are multiple access points to the beautiful Mississippi River, including the Riverwalk. Lovely historic downtown Tunica has specialty shopping and restaurants serving southern favorites and gourmet delicacies. There are abundant outdoor activities including hiking, boating, and fishing.  Also in Tunica County, you will find the world-famous Hollywood Café, immortalized in Marc Cohn’s song, “Walking in Memphis,” and the birthplace of the fried pickle!  All of this charm and appeal is just a short driving distance from Clarksdale, home of the Delta Blues Museum and several great festivals and Memphis, home of Beale Street, Graceland, Stax and Sun Studios.

 

                        Job Duties:  Manages library services in two locations in Tunica County including the Robert C. Irwin Library, a medium-sized branch library in downtown Tunica and the Robinsonville Public Library, a small branch located in the Robinsonville Recreation Center, expected to open August 1, 2014.  Maintains positive internal and external customer service environment. Manages staff of four at Tunica and two at Robinsonville. Schedules staff and volunteers. Oversees development of all programming activities including those for youth. Responsible for community outreach for all ages.  Selects and maintains library collections for both locations. Assists groups and individuals in locating and obtaining materials.  Promotes library services to the public and speaks to groups on behalf of library.  Maintains library statistics and reports.  Participates in professional development activities.  Stays current on library trends. Maintains good relationships with County and City officials, Friends of the Library, area civic clubs and other groups.

 

                        Education & experience:  Minimum:  MLS in Library Science from an accredited institution.  Two to five years of progressively responsible professional experience in public libraries preferred. Prior supervisory and management experience required.  Demonstrated experience in working with the public required.  Knowledge of books and current events important; experience working with computers and Internet searching also necessary.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Strong oral and written communication skills.  Strong management skills.  Knowledge of and ability to use various types of social media preferred. Ability to relate to and work with groups of teens, plus experience providing youth programming is especially helpful as Robinsonville Library will work closely with recreation center staff. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, which includes nights and weekends. Proven skills at building collaborative relationships are highly desirable. Must be able to stand behind circulation desk.  Must be able to lift office supplies and library materials from overhead and from the floor.  Will require some travel within First Regional Library system.

 

Tunica County is a member of First Regional Library, the most exciting library system in the state. Headquarters staff provides support including technical services, public relations, program coordination and grant-writing to our thirteen, soon to be fourteen branches allowing us to provide excellent library service to five counties.
