Freight Transportation Professionals:

Below is an announcement for a webinar being held by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) on Wednesday, June 18th from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM. The webinar occurs immediately after the FHWA Freight Office's Talking Freight webinar held on the same day. The IEDC webinar will focus on manufacturing reshoring from overseas, particularly China, to the United States or North America. Though this webinar is not a transportation-focused webinar, the implications of reshoring to the United States or North America could have significant impacts on freight transportation patterns across all modes in the coming years.

I have heard Harry Moser, one of the presenters for this webinar and a national leader in promoting reshoring initiatives, speak through my involvement with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP); he is quite good. The webinar is not free, but may be very worthwhile for some of you. The IEDC primarily works with economic development agencies, so if you are interested in the reshoring webinar you may want to contact your economic development counterparts to see if they are attending the webinar.

While the reshoring movement may still be in its early stages, there is real evidence of North American companies reconsidering the domestic option for manufacturing. Rapidly rising wages in Asia, higher oil costs, a broader understanding of total manufacturing and development costs, and the strategic impacts of offshoring, are some of factors that are making offshore look less attractive. There are also attractive factors such as lower U.S. and Canadian energy costs, a consumer preference for North American made products, and a depreciated dollar that are contributing.

In this webinar, presenters will discuss the data and tools that make a strong case for reshoring. Harry Moser of the Reshoring Initiative will discuss how to assist companies to accurately assess their total cost of offshoring and consider the domestic alternative. Mark Condon of Datamyne* will provide insights on key import data and how it can be useful to help identify companies that are good prospects for returning production to U.S. shores.

Key Takeways:
* Review the total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis that assesses a company's total cost of offshoring
* How to help companies use TCO to quantify the benefits of local production
* Learn how to develop an integrated, targeted program to identify companies which might be convinced to substitute local production for imports.
*Datamyne's Database is a paid subscription service
