Topic: Understanding Third-Party Logistics (3PL) Companies and What They Do

Date/Time: June 18, 2014  1:00 - 2:30 pm EDT

Registration: http://www.ops.fhwa.dot.gov/freight/fpd/talking_freight/index.htm

Description: The supply chain management field involves a wide variety of companies that manufacture, sell, store, and transport products. From a transportation professional's or even layperson's point of view, manufacturers, retailers, and freight carriers all have relatively straightforward and easy to understand roles in supply chain management. However, many other companies assist the manufacturers, retailers, and freight carriers with their supply chain management operations. Often called third-party logistics firms, or 3PLs, these companies provide value-added services to the manufacturers, retailers, and freight carriers they serve. Many transportation professionals, especially in the public sector, have heard of 3PLs and are aware they exist, but they do not have a good understanding of what work they do, what services they provide, or even what companies can be classified as 3PLs.

This webinar will provide insight into how 3PLs work with their manufacturer, retailer, and/or freight carrier customers to enhance those companies' operations by providing knowledge and expertise those companies do not have internally. It will also examine how 3PLs often differ from one another by focusing on different facets of supply chain management, including firms that provide more strategic, consulting-oriented services that are sometimes called 4PLs, or fourth-party logistics firms.

The Benefits of 3PLs from the Manufacturer Perspective
This presentation will discuss how a manufacturer, or a first-party logistics firm, works with its 3PL providers and benefits from the value-added services provided by its 3PL partners. The presentation will have a particular focus on how Sephora, a cosmetics manufacturer, views and benefits from transportation-focused 3PL services.
SPEAKER:

  *   Matt Arnold, Sephora

A 3PL's Overview of Its Transportation and Warehousing Logistics Services
This presentation will discuss how a third-party logistics firm performs its operations, how it coordinates with other companies in the supply chain, and how it is able to provide value to its customers. The presentation will have a particular focus on transportation and warehousing logistics services provided by a 3PL.
SPEAKER:

  * Matt Emison, Menlo Worldwide Logistics

An Overview of Supply Chain Strategy and Consulting Services - Crossing the Line from 3PL to 4PL Services
This presentation will discuss how some third-party logistics firms focus their efforts more on supply chain strategy and consulting services rather than a specific aspect of the supply chain. Sometimes also called fourth-party logistics (4PL) firms, these companies often work with not only manufacturers, retailers, and/or freight carriers but also 3PLs to ensure the entire supply chain is able to function in an efficient manner.
SPEAKER:

  *   Geoff Milsom, enVista

In addition to the above presentations, Chip Millard from the FHWA Office of Freight Management and Operations will provide a brief, introductory presentation that gives a general overview of what 3PLs do, how they fit into the overall universe of supply chain management services, and how their role can be best understood by public sector transportation professionals.
