Eastman Commits $2 Million to College of Engineering
UT’s College of Engineering and Eastman Chemical Company have announced plans to provide for three new professor of practice positions, improve and renovate lab space and construct a new student lounge. Taking all areas into account, Eastman’s support for the college will total $2 million over a five-year period.
College of Engineering Celebrates 2014 Commencement

The College of Engineering recognized two hundred ninety graduates at the Spring 2014 commencement ceremony at Thompson-Boling Arena on Wednesday, May 7, 2014. Parents, friends, and family were present for the ceremony, which started at 1:00 p.m. with a procession of faculty from both the college and the university.

Research Into Droplets Could Lead to Breakthroughs in Detection, Clean Water
The ability to pull water out of fog is just one of many possibilities made real by research involving assistant professor Dr. Andy Sarles of the College of Engineering’s Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering. The project Sarles took part in—Air-Stable Droplet Interface Bilayers on Oil-Infused Surfaces—was published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Lim Becomes First UT Student to Win Notable Transportation Award

Hyeonsup Lim, a PhD candidate in the College of Engineering’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has become the first student from UT to win the Intelligent Transportation Society of Tennessee Scholarship Award and its $2,000 prize.
Faculty Member Wins Navy Prize, Chance to Take Students to Surface Warfare Center
Faculty member Dr. Stephanie TerMaath has won an award from the US Navy for her work in repairing ship hulls. As part of her reward, she and a select group of students will spend the summer furthering her research in a Navy laboratory. TerMaath will receive a $510,000 research grant from the Navy’s Young Investigator Program.
Small gifts can be just as transformational to our students as larger donations. In fact, this past academic year, because of crowdfunding efforts, two of the college’s student groups—the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Robotics team and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) UT Chem E Car team—were able to their respective competitions where they placed first (IEEE Robotics Graduate Team) and second (AIChE Chem E car poster).
