UT Partners with Nonprofit Organization Destination Imagination for Fourteenth Year
Students from forty-one states and sixteen countries came together last week on the UT campus for the Destination

College Business Partners with Local Businesses for High School Summer Program
Thirty-five high school students from the Southeast will participate in the Business Education for Talented Students
(BETS) summer camp, which begins Thursday, June 5th on the UT campus. The program, which runs through June 14th, will teach students office etiquette, personal finance, and potential career paths in the business world. Students will have the opportunity to
interact with UT faculty members and business experts while also learning about the various majors offered in UT’s College of Business Administration.

Modeling Hope for Knoxville: KARM Embraces Two-Way Engagement
Like UT, Knox Area Rescue Ministries (KARM) has been changing their one-way charity model to a more sustainable
two-way one. “’No one is so poor that they don’t have something to give,’” says director Burt Rosen, quoting Bob Lupton’s book, “Toxic Charity.” “Part of what Bob was talking about flies in the face of what rescue missions have traditionally done. When a
person is in crisis, we are not expecting them to contribute something back,” Rosen stresses, “But if you desire to go a little further, instead of being a consumer of the service, there are opportunities here. What goes away is one-way giving. Everyone is
capable of giving back.” This week, a News-Sentinel article highlighted KARM’s reciprocal approach, shedding new light on best practices for charitable work in our community.

Journal of Community Engagement and Scholarship (May 5th, 2014): Tackling Wicked Problems Through Engaged Scholarship
Engaged scholarship combines the work of universities and community partners. Results can be powerful examples
of the synergy that arises between theory and practice. Academic benefits extend far beyond the universities as university programs provide realistic training to students as an example of future work-related duties and assignments and to collaborate with community
partners in service delivery. Community-engaged scholarship can lead to a strengthened sense of community, lasting partnerships, and increased dialogue surrounding challenging issues. Author Sharon Paynter is an assistant professor of political science at
East Carolina University.
