The Knoxville Homeless Management Information System (KnoxHMIS) Annual Report and Knoxville-Knox County Homeless Coalition Biennial Study is now available. This report marks the 16th study of homelessness in Knoxville-Knox County and highlights twenty-eight years of data collection in this area. KnoxHMIS is sponsored by the City of Knoxville, the Knoxville/Knox County Homeless Coalition, Knox County, Comcast, and the University of Tennessee and administered by the UT College of Social Work Office of Research and Public Service (SWORPS). David L. Patterson of the College of Social Work is the administrator of the project. KnoxHMIS received national recognition from the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities in 2012 in the form of a C. Peter Magrath University-Community Engagement Exemplary Program Award.

2. UT Honors Local Educators for Excellence in Leadership

The University of Tennessee recently recognized two local principals as outstanding education leaders in the state. Benjamin Clabo of Pigeon Forge High School in Sevier County received the University Council for Educational Administration Excellence in Educational Leadership Award. J. Terry Shrader of Hillsboro High School in Davidson County received the William J. and Lucille H. Field Award for Excellence in Secondary Principalship for the State of Tennessee. Both educators were presented with the awards through the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences.

3. Call for Proposals: UT’s OUTstanding Conference

The OUTstanding Conference, the annual LGBTQ+ conference now in its fourth year at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, seeks proposals for presentations and workshops. This year’s theme is the LGBTQ+ Mind, Body, and Soul. The theme covers topics of physical wellness, sports, sexual health, mental health, mental illness, suicide prevention, body image issues, healthy relationships, spirituality, religion, and arts/theater. All persons interested in presenting at the conference are invited to submit a proposal, including faculty, staff, students, and community members. 4. UT English Language Institute Faculty Offer Free English Course to Fellow Employees

UT English Language Institute (ELI) Faculty developed a free course to teach English to a group of UT's own Facilities Services workers who speak English as a second language. The class had its final session of the year last week. The ELI hopes to continue teaching the course in future as long as it has willing participants and sees a need.

7. Call for Papers: Scholarly Symposium & Extension Exhibition on the Centennial of the Smith-Lever Act of 1914

A century ago, the Smith-Lever Act of 1914 established the United States Cooperative Extension System, a partnership of the Department of Agriculture, land-grant colleges, and state and local governments. This historic legislation provided federal support to land-grant colleges in “cooperation with the Department of Agriculture ... in order to aid in diffusing among the people of the United States useful and practical information . . .” This centennial symposium provides an opportunity for scholars to consider the legacy, present condition, and future directions of cooperative extension, as well as the engagement mission of public higher education. Papers for this symposium should address historical aspects of Cooperative Extension or contemporary issues and future directions. One-page proposal submissions should be sent to Dr. Nathan M. The Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities is seeking proposals for paper presentations, roundtable presentations, and posters for the 2014 CUMU Conference. Presentation tracks include: Creative Placemaking, Student Engagement, and Community Revitalization; Healthy Neighborhoods by Design; Social Entrepreneurs, a New Model for Urban Sustainability; and Place-based Reform of K-12 Public Education and Successful Strategies for Addressing College Readiness & Completion. 10. Call for Papers: Shaping Peace – Local Infrastructures and State Formation

The International Association for Peace and Conflict Studies and the ECPR Standing Group on Critical Peace and Conflict Studies seeks papers for their third annual conference, September 11-12th, 2014 at the University of Manchester. The conference welcomes single paper and panel proposals on issues relating to Local Infrastructures of Peace and Peace/State Formation, including but not limited to: local initiatives of peacebuilding; theoretical and conceptual investigations of the factors underlying peacebuilding; the institutional characteristics of local peace initiatives; the relationship between local initiatives and the nature of the state; the relationship between the state and the international; and local to global peace networks.

11. USAID: Funding for People to People Programs in Select Countries for Conflict Mitigation and Reconciliation Programs

Funding is available for Conflict Management and Mitigation Grants of $100,000 - $1,200,000 for proposals that make significant strides in the overall goal of conflict mitigation, peace, and reconciliation through the implementation of people-to-people activities in selected eligible conflict-affected countries. This funding opportunity is intended to fund conflict mitigation programs with a people-to-people approach, and to derive lessons learned and best practices for future people-to-people programming. Lessons learned will be incorporated into future programs and funding opportunities, and will inform DCHA/CMM’s research agenda for conflict management and mitigation.

12. Schwab Foundation: Social Entrepreneur of the Year Competition

The Social Entrepreneur of the Year Competition, an initiative of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, recognizes outstanding social entrepreneurs around the globe. Selected winners will receive access to a peer network of social entrepreneurs, special benefits such as pro-bono consulting services and scholarships to executive education courses at world-class institutions such as Harvard Business School, Stanford University and INSEAD. Winners also will be invited to the regional meetings of the World Economic Forum and highlighted as leading social entrepreneurs in a plenary session with heads of state and/or corporate leaders. Finalists and winners under 40 will be nominated to the Young Global Leaders network of the World Economic Forum.

13. Gates Foundation: Short Film Challenge for Innovative Solutions

The Sundance Institute, in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, invites storytellers from around the globe to be a part of a first-ever Short Film Challenge. Five winners will have the opportunity to premiere their film at Sundance Film Festival, with $10,000 prize and all-expense paid trip to attend the Festival. Create a unique, compelling, and personal Short Film that explores an empowering person or an optimistic story about individuals and communities who are overcoming poverty and hunger, combatting disease, or improving health. The style and structure are up to the individual filmmaker, but the film must touch on economic inequalities.

15. New Release: International Social Progress Index 2014

On April 3, 2014, the Social Progress Imperative launched its Social Progress Index 2014, with “social progress” defined as the capacity of a society to meet the basic human needs of its citizens, establish the building blocks that allow citizens and communities to enhance and sustain the quality of their lives, and create the conditions for all individuals to reach their full potential. 17. New Research and Practice Collaboratory Website

Research + Practice Collaboratory has launched a new website invites users to visit, sign up for the forthcoming newsletter, comment on useful resources, and send early feedback through the site’s contact link. The Research+Practice Collaboratory is an NSF-funded project funded to address the challenging gap between research and practice in STEM education across both formal and informal settings. Led by researchers from the Exploratorium, Education Development Center Inc., University of Colorado, TERC, Inverness Research, and University of Washington, the Collaboratory is experimenting with novel arrangements that better connect research and practice as well as build new relationships between researchers and practitioners.
