Join for Free: Community Network for Research Equity & Impact (CNREI)
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other research funding agencies have identified community engagement in research as central to
understanding and addressing racial, ethnic, linguistic and socioeconomic health disparities. Substantial investments are being made to support faculty members and academic institutions. In February 2013, the
CNREI released a report that articulates an Agenda for Action
and described how communities want a shared, balanced, and equal ownership stake in the decision making systems for research at federal, tribal and state levels, and within academic institutions. The CNREI has since grown to over 300 community partners, reflecting
diversity in terms of participant location, race/ethnicity, gender, research experience and funding. Community leaders and community-based organizations may join the CNREI by completing a form on the link that follows.

Six ways community engagement enhances traditional outreach
There are at least six broad types of assets in communities, many of which we are likely to miss if we focus purely on community needs and
our own, unilateral ability to address them. To identify and help communities mobilize these assets, we can:
1)
Recognize the skills and abilities of individuals within the community and find people who are passionate about the community and who are good at making connections.
2)
Identify voluntary community associations, organizations and networks and what they offer (or could offer) to the community.
3)
Look at what non-government organizations, not for profits, government agencies, and businesses are already connected to the community, paying particular attention
to small, local institutions.
4)
Look at our physical environment (both natural and built) in a new way.
5)
Consider the local economy in a broad way so that we include the informal economy (e.g., people swapping goods and services, voluntary work) as well as the traditional
economy (e.g. production, consumption).
6)
Appreciate the stories, culture and heritage of the community.
