Topic: Environmental Benchmarking in Freight Transportation

Date/Time: April 16, 2014 1:00 – 2:30 pm EDT

Registration: http://www.ops.fhwa.dot.gov/freight/fpd/talking_freight/index.htm

Description: Freight transportation movements, while providing significant economic and quality of life benefits to communities, regions, states, and countries, also create environmental impacts in those jurisdictions.  Both public sector governments and private sector freight carriers and manufacturers have worked to reduce emissions and other environmental impacts created by freight transportation movements.  In order to better measure those environmental impacts, some organizations, both public and private, have created benchmarks to more easily compare and quantify the amount of emissions generated by vehicles or products on a relative basis.  By understanding the quantity of emissions generated relative to set standards, freight carriers and manufacturers can more easily take actions that reduce emissions down to acceptable levels that meet benchmark requirements.

This webinar will provide an overview of how freight transportation-related emissions can be measured and benchmarked relative to existing norms.  It will also include discussion about specific efforts freight carriers and manufacturers are taking to meet or surpass environmental benchmarks.

Environmental Benchmarking in Freight Transportation – Overview

This presentation will provide an overview of the Transportation Research Board’s “Handbook on Applying Environmental Benchmarking in Freight Transportation”.  Various existing, private sector examples of environmental benchmarking across multiple freight transportation modes will be reviewed and discussed.
