Dear Geographers:

 

I am proud to announce that several of our Geography students and faculty members received awards or other important disciplinary recognitions at the Association of American Geographers meeting earlier in April.   I have listed the specific person and the award/recognition received at the Tampa meeting.  Many thanks Dr. Grissino-Mayer for collecting this information.  Please join me in congratulating our colleagues.  I have forwarded news of this success to our Dean (Terri Lee) and College Communications Director (Lynn Champion).

 

Students

·         Scott Basford (MS student): Awarded Best Student Paper, Ethnic Geography Specialty Group, Association of American Geographers. Scott also won the Best Student Paper Award, Population Geography Specialty Group, AAG.

·         Matt Cook (PhD student): Elected to a two-year term as graduate student representative to the Cultural Geography Specialty Group, Association of American Geographers. Matt was reappointed to a second two-year term on the AAG’s Ethnic Geography Specialty Group’s Student Advisory Board,.

·         Erik Johanson (PhD student): Awarded the Top Graduate Student Research Grant (PhD level), Biogeography Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers.  Erik also received the Top Student Research Grant (PhD level) from the Paleoenvironmental Change Specialty Group of the AAG.

·         Jihwan Yoon (PhD student): Received the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association Geospatial Scholarship Award at the AAG meeting.

 

Faculty

·         Sally Horn : Awarded the James J. Parsons Distinguished Career Award by the Biogeography Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers. 

·         Hyun Kim: Elected as a Board Member of the AAG’s Transportation Geography Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers.

·         Derek Alderman: Received the 2014 AAG Media Achievement Award.
