The annual Chancellor's Honors Banquet<http://chancellor.utk.edu/honorsbanquet/2014/> is a showcase of the best and brightest at the University of Tennessee, and the 2014 edition proved to be quite a night for students and faculty of the College of Engineering. The banquet was held Wednesday evening, April 23, 2014, and the University Center.

Southeast Section of AACG holds meeting

The recently formed Southeast Section of the American Association for Crystal Growth (AACG) held its second meeting March 12, 2014, on the University of Tennessee campus. There were fifty-six people in attendance, including members from Atlanta, Georgia, and Fisk University in Nashville. Several local companies were also represented, as was the Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL), Y-12, and UT. After-dinner speaker Dr. Peter Cohen, a research scientist at Siemens Molecular Imaging, gave an overview of Siemens' crystal growth activities.

The meeting was partially supported by the UT Office of Research, via funding for the Tennessee Crystal Synthesis Initiative Organized Research Unit, which is co-directed by Dr. David Mandrus and Dr. Veerle Keppens.

CURENT honored with spot in USA Science and Engineering Festival

The National Science Foundation area of the USA Science and Engineering Festival will have a UT feel thanks to a spot in the prestigious event going to CURENT, the Center for Ultra-Wide-Area Resilient Electric Energy Transmission Networks<http://curent.utk.edu/>.

“Being able to take part in events like this helps serve as a way to educate the public about what CURENT does, but to do so in an engaging, entertaining way,” said College of Engineering Dean Wayne Davis. “Any time you have a chance to make a positive impression on young minds it’s a great opportunity.”

Energy Secretary Moniz at UT for Distinguished Lecture

[Ernest Moniz]US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz, at right, will deliver the Baker Distinguished Lecture on Energy and the Environment at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 25, in Room 132 of the College of Law, 1505 West Cumberland Avenue. Moniz will also talk about the Department of Energy and its activities in the state of Tennessee. The lecture is free and open to the public. Dr. Jon Hathaway

Hathaway to develop research in NSF program

Dr. Jon Hathaway, assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering<http://cee.utk.edu/>, has received support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Catalyzing New International Collaborations (CNIC) Program. Hathaway will work over the next year to develop research opportunities in the area of sustainable urban water management with colleagues from the University of Melbourne and Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. This project will allow greater knowledge transfer and synergistic activities between the researchers, specifically advancing the science of modeling urban pollutants in stormwater systems.

EUReCA award winners announced

At the 2014 EUReCA awards ceremony<http://eureca.utk.edu/2014-eureca-awardees/>, five College of Engineering undergraduate research projects were chosen as outstanding examples of undergraduate research. These awards come with a cash prizes, given by the Office of Research and the College of Engineering.

There were twenty-five total engineering entries from seven engineering departments, representing the excellent work of engineering students.

Morin wins STAR award

Emily Morin, a PhD student working with Dr. Wei He in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering<http://mabe.utk.edu/>, was presented a Student Travel Achievement Recognition (STAR) award from the Society for Biomaterials (SFB) 2014 Annual Meeting<http://2014.biomaterials.org/> in Denver, Colorado, April 16-19, 2014. She gave an oral presentation on her research of the versatile use of cationic hydrogel particles to modulate neuronal cell growth on artificial materials. The STAR awards are given by the SFB to recognize research excellence and develop future leaders in the field of biomaterials.

COE Advising seeks engineering undergrad student workers

The Engineering Advising Office<http://www.engr.utk.edu/advising/> needs three engineering undergraduate student workers to help with orientation for freshmen using MyUTK for class registration during the months of June-July 2014. The work hours are 9:00 a.m. to noon, two mornings each week, June 2 through July 11. Qualifications include strong communication skills, friendly, helpful, and good understanding of MyUTK. Workers will earn $8 per hour.

The Black Cultural Center extends its hours in order to accommodate those students who wish to have additional studying time. Stress relief activities and snacks are also provided for students to aid in their studying.

Tutoring positions open in Educational Advancement Program

The UT Educational Advancement Program<http://web.utk.edu/~eap/> has tutor positions available for the fall 2014 semester. Subject areas include: chemistry, biology, math, Spanish, accounting, engineering, statistics, economics, and physics. The positions pay $9 per hour for undergraduate tutors and $10 per hour for graduate tutors. Application deadline is May 2, 2014. Completion of the application and training is required. Submissions open for XSEDE14 Visualization Showcase

Submissions are invited for the XSEDE14 Visualization Showcase, the third annual conference of the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE). The conference is scheduled for July 13-18, 2014, at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta, Georgia.
The deadline for abstract submission is April 30, 2014.

Summer research course available at UTSI

The research course Physics 642, "Advanced Topics in Modern Physics: Spectral Line Shapes," will be offered in June and July at the UT Space Institute (UTSI) in Tullahoma, Tennessee. The course is composed of (1) attendance of the 22nd International Conference on Spectral Line Shapes at UTSI<http://icsls22.utsi.edu> during June 1-6; (2) composition of six scientific summaries/critiques of two pages/each of presented papers at ICSLS, and (3) discussing and defending these critiques during the three class meetings on July 16, 23, and 30.

Arabic language courses offered

The UT Arabic program is looking for students, particularly freshmen, interested in learning to speak, read, and write Arabic. The program currently offers three years worth of courses. Arabic is the fifth most spoken language in the world, and Arab-speaking countries offer many engineering opportunities.

Johns Hopkins University center seeks instructors for summer

The Center for Talented Youth (CTY) at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, seeks enthusiastic instructors for its summer programs for gifted students in grades 2-12. The CTY offers intense, three-week academic programs for highly talented students from around the country and across the world. Science instructors will have the opportunity to gain experience teaching gifted students while working in a small class setting (approximately twelve to eighteen students, depending on the age group).

Featured student: Stephen Whitson

[Stephen Whitson]Our student this week is Stephen Whitson, a materials science and engineering major who accepted a co-op at Bryce Corporation in Memphis, Tennessee.

Whitson describes the department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.

"I worked in the R&D department at Bryce," he said. "My responsibilities have been primarily focused on reorganization work. I was given the opportunity to learn new skills in the corporate internal SAP, lamination process, film properties, and flexible packaging testing."

Whitson added that the most valuable benefit he received during his co-op assignment was, "Learning to work in a professional environment and get things done in a complex corporate/manufacturing system."

EF 301— Career Services for Engineers
Planning your class schedule for Fall 2014? Don’t forget to register for EF 301 – Engineering Career Planning!

This class is offered each Spring and Fall semester and is taught 1:25–2:15 p.m. Mondays at Career Services, 100 Dunford Hall. This class is a perfect fit for all Juniors and Seniors and will equip students with the right tools to land that great job. Sophomores and Graduate Students may also register for the course as well. The class is offered on a 1-hour Satisfactory/No Credit basis and is taught by Career Services Consultant for the College of Engineering, April Gonzalez/Justin Rice. Expect visits from company representatives, tips and tricks from HR Recruiters, advice on resumes, cover letters, interviewing and salary negotiation and learn the ways you can stand out and get noticed at the job fairs.
