Nuclear engineering soccer team finds success

The UT Department of Nuclear Engineering soccer team, called What's NU?, has reached an unprecedented level of success this year. The team qualified to the playoffs and has won their first game of the playoffs. The team's current record stands at three wins and one loss. Rumor has it that their "old professor," Ivan Maldonado, scored a goal during their last game.

The team includes students from Dr. Maldonado's NE470 class (Cody Walker, Fahad Zaman, Salman Altamimi, and Naser Burahmah), one of his PhD students (Cole Gentry), plus other graduate students and former NE470 survivors (Cory Griffard and Ben Dabbs). The team's name "What's NU?" is an old joke often told in NE470, where nuclear engineers should always answer "2.54 neutrons per fission."

Featured student: LingJing "Jerry" Chen

Jerry ChenOur student this week is, LingJing “Jerry” Chen, a mechanical engineering major who accepted a co-op at Schlumberger, located in Houston, Texas. He describes the department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.

"I worked in Acquisition Systems (Surface)," said Chen. "We help maintain the equipment used to acquire downhole data. Every day there is Surface equipment either needing an incoming system test or outgoing system test. The reason for the numerous tests is that the oil and gas industry is an exact one. Twenty-four hours of down time is $1 million in lost revenue. Therefore, the equipment sent out of Surface has to be reliable.

"My project was an OST software solution. Currently, they are using a hardware solution and it requires two people to conduct an OST. My software solution would cut the existing time by about 80%. OSTs are the backbone of reliability and maintainability in this industry. As a result, we can implement my software solution at surface labs all over the world."

Chen found valuable benefits in connections he made during his co-op assignment.

"I made lifelong correspondents," he said. "The men and women who work in the oil and gas industry are the best problem solvers you’ll ever meet. I also gained new insight into what the life of an oil-rig engineer is like."

Students, please note: If you receive a co-op or internship offer, please contact Engineering Professional Practice for help with paperwork and any preparations you may need – [log in to unmask], 865-974-5323, or 310 Perkins Hall.
