Transformations: Community Engagement Featured in Chancellor’s Annual Report
UT’s community-campus partnerships were highlighted in the 2013 Chancellor’s Annual Report released last week, and we were thrilled to see
Chancellor Cheek call out a number of our recent outreach and engagement incentive grant winners. “Today,” said Cheek, “we are developing a new campus culture that recognizes the value of outreach scholarship and ensures that the university and the people
we serve get the most from our mutually beneficial partnerships.”

Wanted: UT’s NIMBioS Needs Volunteer Science Lovers to Analyze Howls
UT’s National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis needs citizen scientists for the Canid Howl Project. Log in to a website,
listen to howls, and plot them on a graph according to directions - or donate a recording of your own dog's howl. Along with your enthusiasm, NIMBioS needs your expertise! "Humans are actually better at analyzing the sounds than computers," said postdoctoral
fellow Arik Kershenbaum.

to document the benefits of “high-performance landscapes.” Resulting research projects will be published by the Landscape Architecture Foundation as part of an online, interactive set of resources for designers, agencies and others to evaluate the performance
of landscapes and to argue for sustainable landscape solutions.

PSYC 399 – Mentoring At-Risk Youth
In fall 2014, Dr. Chris Elledge will offer a section of PSYC 399 that provides college students the opportunity to mentor an at-risk youth (e.g. bullied child). The course has two components: Service learning and didactic. The service-learning
component will provide students with the opportunity to mentor an at-risk youth. Mentoring occurs twice each week during the student’s regularly scheduled recess time. Mentors help students have more positive relationships
and interactions with their peers at school. The course also has a didactic component: Students are provided with an introduction to what has been learned through research on mentoring youth. Student must have reliable transportation and some flexibility in

Launch of Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Awards Program
This program encourages more active integration of patients, caregivers, clinicians/providers, industry, payers/purchasers, researchers, and
other stakeholders, as integral members of the research enterprise. Maximum award: $250,000 for up to two years. The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) will fund proposals in three categories: (1) Knowledge Awards, to build knowledge
around how consumers of healthcare information receive and make use of PCOR/CER findings, (2) Training and Development Awards, to promote the training and development of the “non-usual suspects” and others from the patient and stakeholder community to increase
capacity for engaging in PCOR/CER. Additionally, there is the Pipeline to Proposal Awards, a specific initiative within the Training and Development Award program. This initiative seeks to shift the research-funding paradigm, allowing patients and other key
stakeholders (e.g., caregivers, clinicians/providers, industry, payers/purchasers) to engage and partner with researchers to study the issues that are most critical to them, and (3) Dissemination Awards, which will support activities such as disseminating
information and encouraging adoption of PCORI-funded research results, as well as support best practices for engaging patients and other key stakeholders (e.g., caregivers, clinicians/providers, industry, payers/purchasers) in research.
Key Dates: Letters of Inquiry accepted on rolling basis;
application by invitation only

Making Engagement Relevant in Higher Education
We listen to public, and they have a say in setting the research agenda. After all, universities undertake research with public funds; they
must be accountable to the public”. Such were the sentiments expressed during three dialogues on ‘strengthening community engagement in higher education in India’ during March 3-7, 2014.

“What Fires Should Educators Light?” - Association of American Colleges and Universities
Liberal Education, Winter 2014 Vol. 100, No. 1 Out Now
Excerpt:
“At a time when society is faced with the tremendous challenges of poverty and growing inequality, global environmental problems, food security, new and emerging diseases, scarcity of resources, and conflict, more than ever
we need not only science and technology, but also innovative thinkers, advocates, and activists. We need educated people who aren’t content with simply finding a job, but are still idealistic enough to want to change the world for the better. In other words,
we need higher education to lead the charge in lighting fires, to be inspiring the next generation of problem solvers who will work at the front lines of these grand challenges of the twenty-first century.”
