More High-Performance Landscapes for East Tennessee Brad Collett has received a research fellowship to develop performance evaluation methods for regional landscape projects. The program pairs student-faculty teams with leading design professionals to document the benefits of “high-performance landscapes.” Resulting research projects will be published by the Landscape Architecture Foundation as part of an online, interactive set of resources for designers, agencies and others to evaluate the performance of landscapes and to argue for sustainable landscape solutions. Interdisciplinary Study of Three Urban Neighborhoods in Knoxville Congratulations to Lisa Mason (Social Work) who has received funding from UT's Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment for an interdisciplinary study that she is launching with Dr. Kelsey Ellis (Geography) and Dr. Jon Hathaway (Engineering), titled: Microenvironments, Vulnerability, and Resilience in the City of Knoxville: A Comparative Study of Three Urban Neighborhoods. 5. Public Horticulture Grad Student is Scholar of the Week! Amanda Plante is pursuing her master’s degree in UT’s Public Horticulture Program, one of the very few programs in the United States which prepares students for careers in public gardens, arboretums, and conservatories; professional garden writing and speaking; teaching; and research in socio-horticulture (the study of people-plant relationships). IDS 425 – Design Thinking Open to students of all undergraduate disciplines, design thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer’s toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success. PSYC 399 – Mentoring At-Risk Youth In fall 2014, Dr. Chris Elledge will offer a section of PSYC 399 that provides college students the opportunity to mentor an at-risk youth (e.g. bullied child). The course has two components: Service learning and didactic. The service-learning component will provide students with the opportunity to mentor an at-risk youth. Mentoring occurs twice each week during the student’s regularly scheduled recess time. Mentors help students have more positive relationships and interactions with their peers at school. The course also has a didactic component: Students are provided with an introduction to what has been learned through research on mentoring youth. BUAD 499/BUAD595 – Leadership in Nonprofit Organizations Leadership in Non-Profit Organizations, a College of Business service-learning course, offers opportunities for students to gain knowledge and experience in the world of nonprofits, the fastest growing major sector in the U.S. economy. The service-learning component of the course will allow students to consult with local nonprofit organizations and gain valuable work experience. The course is designed for all interested students. Both 400 and 500 level sections will be offered that require no prerequisites. UT’s Smart Communities Initiative Seeking Faculty Partners for Cleveland, Tennessee Projects The Smart Communities Initiative (SCI) is currently identifying fall 2014, spring 2015, and summer 2015 course matches for various projects in partnership with Cleveland. Student work could take the form of applied research (e.g. an economic feasibility analysis), the development of a work product (e.g. a street-scale design plan), or the implementation of a defined strategy for improvement (e.g. physical stream restoration). Travel and course design expenses (up to $1000) will be covered by the SCI. Collaborative Research Summer Institute The Collaborative Research Summer Institute is a three-day intensive training opportunity to introduce graduate students and early career scholars to theories, methods, ethics, and democratic aspects of collaborative research. Through seminars, roundtables, and hands-on workshops, participants will develop skills and knowledge to begin engaging in equity-oriented community-based collaborative research. Call for Journal Articles: Special Service-Learning Issue, Currents in Teaching and Learning Currents in Teaching and Learning is now accepting papers for a special Fall 2014 edition focusing on service-learning. Currents is a peer-reviewed electronic journal published semi-annually by Worcester State University. Drucker Institute Invites Applications for 2014 Award for Nonprofit Innovation The Drucker Institute at Claremont Graduate University is now accepting applications for the 2014 Peter F. Drucker Award for Nonprofit Innovation. The award, which includes a cash prize of $100,000, seeks to recognize existing nonprofit programs that make a difference in the lives of community members and demonstrate a commitment to innovation. Launch of Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Awards Program This program encourages more active integration of patients, caregivers, clinicians/providers, industry, payers/purchasers, researchers, and other stakeholders, as integral members of the research enterprise. Maximum award: $250,000 for up to two years. The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) will fund proposals in three categories: (1) Knowledge Awards, to build knowledge around how consumers of healthcare information receive and make use of PCOR/CER findings, (2) Training and Development Awards, to promote the training and development of the “non-usual suspects” and others from the patient and stakeholder community to increase capacity for engaging in PCOR/CER. Additionally, there is the Pipeline to Proposal Awards, a specific initiative within the Training and Development Award program. Just Published: Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement 18(1) JOHEO is the premier peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal to advance theory and practice related to all forms of outreach and engagement between higher education institutions and communities. This issue includes a number of research articles, including the first in a series of articles on Cooperative Extension, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act. Randy Stoecker's article explores the collaboration between Extension and service-learning efforts, proposing a new model to expand this partnership.
