COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT NEWS

1. Faculty Community Engagement Featured at Chancellor's Honors Banquet

The Chancellor's Honors Banquet is held each spring to recognize students, faculty, staff, and community members for their extraordinary achievements. The 2014 banquet was held April 23rd at the University Center. In addition to recognizing outstanding outreach and service, top honors were also presented in a number of other categories for faculty work that incorporate respectful, mutually beneficial partnerships with the external community. A few are featured below: the full list of awards is available online at http://chancellor.utk.edu/honorsbanquet/2014/

2. 2014 Excellence in Academic Outreach

The Excellence in Academic Outreach award honors those who exemplify UT’s land-grant mission by using intellectual capital to benefit the citizens of Tennessee. 2014 honoree Suzanne Lenhart was nominated by the Academic Outreach and Engagement Council. Lenhart, a mathematics professor and Chancellor’s Professor, serves as associate director for education, outreach, and diversity at the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS). Louis Gross, the director of NIMBioS, wrote in her nomination letter that Lenhart’s “persistent devotion” to giving more opportunities to students interested in STEM careers has “directly benefitted thousands of participants since NIMBioS has operated, and been a major contributor to the ongoing success of this institute.”

3. 2014 L. R. Hesler Award

The L. R. Hesler Award was established by students, colleagues, and friends of the longtime head of the botany department and former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences to reward exceptional teaching and service. 2014 winner James E. Lawler has not slowed down since he became a faculty member in 1975. He has served as department head, helped bring technology-driven teaching to UT, and received grants totaling more than $3 million. In addition to his regular teaching, Lawler also teaches a noncredit course, Meditation for Stress Reduction, and donates all proceeds for teaching it to local nonprofits.

4. 2014 Jefferson Prize

The Jefferson Prize honors a tenured or tenure-track faculty member for significant contributions through research and creative activity. 2014's prizewinner Karla McKanders has brought a new dimension to the UT College of Law’s clinical programs. She and her students have represented clients statewide in immigration and asylum cases with a great deal of success, and she teaches a seminar she developed for UT on asylum law. When law classes are not in session, McKanders carries a substantial pro bono and clinic caseload. She is a member of the Tennessee Bar Association’s Access to Justice Committee, a board member for Friends of Literacy, a member of the College of Law Admissions Committee, and a faculty advisor for several student organizations.

5. 2014 Alumni Outstanding Teacher

Alumni Outstanding Teacher awards are bestowed by the UT Alumni Association to recognize teaching excellence. Among 2014 awardees, political science professor Anthony Nownes is guided by one simple principle—you should teach people how to think, not what to think. He has been adding more group projects and service-learning activities. He said he is open to virtually anything that he believes will help his students. His nominator agreed, saying, “Today, I am a professor myself. I never would have made it in this profession without Dr. Nownes.”

6. 2014 Ready for the World Award

The Ready for the World honor is awarded to a faculty member who has worked to enhance intercultural and international awareness of students and the campus community. 2014 Awardee, Michael Handelsman, is director of global studies, the largest interdisciplinary undergraduate major at UT. He also helped create, and serves as faculty director of, the Office of National Scholarships and Fellowships. Handelsman has published nine monographs, multiple textbooks, and countless research articles. His service-learning work and efforts to build international relationships has encouraged many students to embrace international study.
