UT alumnus W. Dwight Kessel receives
Nathan W. Dougherty Award

The College of Engineering gave its most prestigious honor—the Nathan W. Dougherty Award—to industrial engineering graduate W. Dwight Kessel at the college’s annual Faculty and Staff Awards Dinner, held on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Knoxville. The Dougherty Award was established by the college in 1957 to pay tribute to Dr. Nathan Washington Dougherty, dean of the College of Engineering from 1940-1956. The award honors engineers whose accomplishments have brought acclaim to the university.

Hines talks R&M at Maryland symposium

Dr. J. Wesley Hines, Postelle Professor and head of the Department of Nuclear Engineering, was an invited speaker at the twenty-fifth Reliability Symposium on April 2 at the University of Maryland. His talk was titled "Development of a Successful Program in Reliability and Maintainability Engineering."

Dr. Chris Pionke

Pionke named to Educator's Hall of Honor

Dr. Chris Pionke, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering and the director of the College of Engineering Honors Program, was inducted into the University of Tennessee's Educators Hall of Honor on March 27, 2014.

Pionke was one of six inductees in the 2014 class. Founded in 2002, the Educators Hall of Honor acknowledges the work of professionals who have established themselves in the field of education. The hall is housed in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences.

UT NSBE Chapter wins national acclaim

NSBE 2014
UT National Society of Black Engineers members Isaac Atuahene, DeAnna Walker, Diamond Wallace, Markyth Smith, Sierra Ellis, and Tiffany Sithiphone were honored with various awards at the NSBE convention in Nashville last week, including being named the national chapter of the year.

UT’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers was recognized as the National Medium Chapter of the Year and senior Tiffany Sithiphone became the first female from UT to be elected regional chairperson, capping a highly successful national convention for members from the College of Engineering last week in Nashville.

"This is truly a tremendous recognition for our group to receive, and it highlights the successes being made here at UT toward a more diverse campus," said College of Engineering Dean Wayne Davis. "To be recognized for those efforts is nice enough, but to be singled out in front of peer institutions makes it all the more special."

Upreti places high in IIE competition

Girish Upreti, graduate student in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering has been awarded second place in the Eighth IIE Lean Student Paper Competition subject to the presentation at the Institute of Industrial Engineering (IIE) Annual Conference. His paper is entitled "Application of Lean and 5S for Redraw Machine in Bellow Industry: A Case Study."

Awards will be given at the annual Honors & Awards Banquet during IIE Annual Conference at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, Canada, May 31–June 3, 2014. It is the largest industrial and systems engineering event of the year. Girish is working under the supervision of Dr. Rupy Sawhney.

MSE students publish in Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics

Ke Jin and Christopher Ostrouchov, graduate students in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, published an article this week in the journal Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics (PCCP). The two are students of Dr. William Weber, Governor's Chair Professor in Materials Science, who co-authored the article.

Advising Reminder and student survey

The UT Student Government Association (SGA) and the assistant provost for Student Success have partnered to implement a student needs assessment of academic advising. The anonymous, ten-minute survey assesses advising that takes place in a college advising center or in an academic department with an advisor in your major. Students who complete the survey can choose to enter a raffle to win one of twenty $25 Amazon gift cards. You do not have to enter the raffle in order to participate in this assessment.

COE Development seeks student organization projects

The Office of Engineering Development is gathering engineering student group/organization projects that need funding for the 2014-2015 academic year. Submissions open for XSEDE14 Visualization Showcase

The XSEDE14 Visualization Showcase is accepting abstract submissions through April 15, 2014. This year the showcase will include research from non-traditional HPC scientific areas including, but not limited to, digital humanities, bioinformatics, etc., and research completed on systems outside of XSEDE. he XSEDE14 Conference will be held July 13-18, 2014, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Barrett will speak on economic competitiveness

Dr. Craig Barrett, former Chairman of the Board of the Intel Corporation, will speak at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, in a live webcast from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to the Toyota Room of the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy. UT faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend and to participate via the web. The presentation title is "Economic Competitiveness in the 21st Century."

Michael Stone, and Rebakah PattonThe Engineering Professional Practice office celebrated the engineering students who are participating in the co-op and internship program at their annual spring banquet this past week at Club LeConte high atop the First Tennessee building in downtown Knoxville.

All of the seniors who attended were given booklets entitled: Exceed Your Expectations through Lifelong Learning, by J. Michael Stone, center in photo, and a copy of the book, The Power of Professionalism, by Bill Wiersma. Both were provided to the students by the sponsor of the event, J. Michael Stone.

After dinner, Stone spoke and encouraged all the students to pursue a lifetime of learning about business, finance, and leadership subjects. Also, the graduating John W. Prados Chemical Engineering co-op scholarship recipients, Rebekah Patton and Hannah Haines (from left in photo), were recognized at the event having received this prestigious award.

VolsTeach

Mini, Summer, and Fall 2014 Undergraduate Advising and Registration Reminders
The Mini and Summer timetable is available on MyUTK for viewing of course offerings.

Fall Registration:
April 7, 8: Sophomores (30 to 59 hours earned)
April 14, 15: Freshmen (less than 30 hours earned)

Students taking EF 151-152 (Honors EF 157-158) or Physics 135-136 (Honors 137-138) and Math 141-142 (Honors Math147-148) are advised in the Engineering Advising Office located in Room 202 of Estabrook Hall. Come by or call (865)974-4008 to schedule your advising appointment.

Students who have completed EF151-152/Physics 135-136 and Math 141-142 are advised by their major department. Contact your major department to schedule an appointment with your faculty advisor.

EF 301— Career Services for Engineers
Planning your class schedule for Fall 2014? Don’t forget to register for EF 301 – Engineering Career Planning!

This class is offered each Spring and Fall semester and is taught 1:25–2:15 p.m. Mondays at Career Services, 100 Dunford Hall. This class is a perfect fit for all Juniors and Seniors and will equip students with the right tools to land that great job. Sophomores and Graduate Students may also register for the course as well. The class is offered on a 1-hour Satisfactory/No Credit basis and is taught by Career Services Consultant for the College of Engineering, April Gonzalez/Justin Rice. Expect visits from company representatives, tips and tricks from HR Recruiters, advice on resumes, cover letters, interviewing and salary negotiation and learn the ways you can stand out and get noticed at the job fairs.

The Academic Support Unit (ASU) in Multicultural Student Life supports the academic success of students through a variety of services:

The Tutoring Program provides free tutoring to students in a variety of subject areas.

The Book Loan Program allows students to borrow up to two books free of charge. Students must return the borrowed books at the end of the semester. Applications for the Book Loan Program are at multicultural.utk.edu.

Vols Success Seminars The VOL Success Seminars (VSS) is a series of workshops designed to equip all students with the knowledge and resources to be successful, inside and outside of the classroom, at the University of Tennessee. Students can register in for each workshop at multicultural.utk.edu or studentsuccess.utk.edu.

The Final Prep Sessions provide students with a quiet and comfortable environment to study for their final exams.  Students have access to tutoring in a variety of subjects. The Black Cultural Center extends its hours in order to accommodate those students who wish to have additional studying time. Stress relief activities and snacks are also provided for students to aid in their studying. The dates for the Finals Prep Sessions are 10:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m. Monday, April 28, and Tuesday, April 29.


The Student Success Center offers a variety of academic support.
 
Academic Coaching: A one-one-one meeting with a trained GTA who can help with time management, goal setting, and more. Call 865-976-6641 to make an appointment or stop by 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.
 
Academic Success Workshops: Spring sessions are going on now. Please have students contact Doug Renalds ([log in to unmask]) with questions.
 
Supplemental Instruction: Out of class study sessions with trained student SI Leaders. No appointment necessary. Please see the schedule for details.
 
Tutoring: Drop in or by appointment sessions available. Students can check the schedule for details. More tutoring options may be available through the SSC. Contact SSC if you are in need of tutoring for a subject not currently listed on the website.
