General Function       

The University of Tennessee is engaged in a strategy to recruit a larger freshman class, to improve retention of students from first to second year, and promote graduation in four years. The Student Success Librarian will help the Libraries implement and expand instruction and academic engagement programs aimed at assisting first-year and other lower division undergraduate students in learning the tools of scholarship while adjusting to college life. The Student Success Librarian will strengthen library partnerships with First Year Studies, the Student Success Center, and the Division of Student Life to enhance the support system for undergraduate students at The University of Tennessee.   

                                                                                                                              

Specific Duties

·      Serves as Liaison to First Year Studies, Student Success Center, and Division of Student Life

·      Designs, delivers, and assesses instruction for First Year Studies and other undergraduate programs to support learning and engagement in the University

·      Offers classes, consultations, orientations, and tours in support of the first year and general education curriculum

·      Creates programs and partnerships with campus groups and targeted undergraduate learning communities

·      Works with undergraduate instructors to create engaging library assignments, activities, and tutorials for delivery in –person and in an online environment

·      Develops and leads student engagement activities in the Commons and assists with the Dean’s Student Advisory Committee

·      Collaborates with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to welcome prospective students and parents

·      In collaboration with Coordinator of Community Learning Services and Diversity Programs contributes to pre-college programs

·      Engages in professional development, research, and service activities

 

Qualifications

Required:

·      ALA-accredited master's degree

·      Demonstrated commitment to high quality public service and support of the academic needs of students and faculty

·      Demonstrated success in planning, implementing, and leading innovative instruction and student engagement programs

·      Experience teaching information literacy classes

·      Experience developing web-based instructional materials

·      Commitment to advancing the Libraries’ and University’s diversity goals as demonstrated by past experience or through leadership activities

·      Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

·      Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment accompanied by initiative, self-direction, and commitment to innovation, creativity, and excellence

·      Must meet the University’s requirements for promotion and tenure which includes research and service components

HEAD, SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

The University of California, Santa Barbara, one of ten campuses of the University of California system, is seeking an experienced, forward-looking, and engaging leader-scholar for the position of Head, Special Research Collections.  The Head will guide the Department of Special Research Collections (SRC) through its continuing evolution into a dynamic and innovative resource serving diverse and changing scholar needs and interests. The Head will articulate a vision and strategic direction that promotes the visibility, accessibility, and impact of nationally and internationally recognized primary research collections expert services, facilitate collaboration of relevant initiatives and programs, develop fundraising strategies, and integrate the treasures of the Dept. into teaching, research, and learning at the University.


DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL RESEARCH COLLECTIONS:

The Department of Special Research Collections acquires, maintains, preserves, and ensures accessibility of its most valuable, rare and unique materials.  Included are rare books and manuscripts, serials, photographs, and audio-visual materials.  The collection includes approximately 250,000 volumes, 16,000 linear feet of manuscripts, 100,000 photographs and well over 200,000 early sound recordings.  Major strengths of the named collections are the Wyles Collection of nineteenth and twentieth century American History, the American Religions Collection, the Performing Arts Collections, the California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives, and the Humanistic Psychology Archives.  The Department of Special Research Collections also serves as the University Archive.

The Library has begun a project to construct a major three story addition to the existing infrastructure (completion expected late 2015).  The Department of Special Research Collections will occupy 40% of the new library addition.  The Head of SRC will have the opportunity to participate in the planning, design, and furnishing of the new space.  He/she will have the responsibility for envisioning, defining and initiating services, showcasing prominent collections, offering special programs, exhibitions, etc. in this new state of the art facility.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Head of Special Research Collections reports to the AUL for Research and Scholar Services and is responsible for the administration, planning, and management of the department resources, services, and operations.  He/she manages the major constituent units in the department, namely the Rare Books, Manuscripts & Named Collections, Performing Arts Collections, Oral History Program, University Archives, and the California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives.  The incumbent has leadership and administrative responsibility for collection development, budgeting of endowments, gifts, grant funded projects, departmental policies and procedures, security and preservation, public relations, and fundraising activities.  The Head is responsible for the management and supervision of employees in the department.

The Head of Special Research Collections administers the collections budget and a number of endowments.  The Head also manages the budget for grant funded projects, student staffing and other initiatives.  Establishes and sustains faculty and researcher relationships conducive to the development of premier research collections and supporting services. Responsible for strategic and effective collection development, maintenance and preservation of collections, overall collection policies and works to ensure materials acquired by Dept.  are discoverable, accessible and used by clientele.  Consults with donors, rare book and manuscripts dealers to acquire new acquisitions and gifts for the collection.  Oversees research, reference, and instructional services, outreach, programs, exhibitions, and donor relations.  Responsible for overall security of collections, including materials housed in off campus remote locations.  Collaborates with curators and subject specialists to identify sources for endowments, grants, and gifts to the collections.  Works with Acquisitions, Cataloging & Metadata Services, and the Library Digitizing Center for the processing and digitization of Special Research Collections materials.

Develop and identify fundraising strategies and opportunities for building endowments, gifts, support for collections, and funding projects.  Initiate and write proposals to supports departmental goals, objectives and activities.  Provides stewardship for existing gifts and awards.   Works closely with University Librarian, other library administrators, Library Development Officer, faculty and professional colleagues to identify new sources and contacts for enhancing funds and collections.  Collaborates with Library Development Officer and Curators to organize, manage, and spearhead special events, such as new acquisitions program, private showings for donors, donor recognition events, and opening of exhibitions. Works with Institutional Advancement  and campus communication to publicize events, new collections, exhibitions, programs and other activities. Oversees Special Research Collections Curators responsible for organizing lecturers, exhibitions, and programs to showcase outstanding collections and encourage research and use of collections.  Establishes partnerships with campus departments, museums, UC system wide Special Collections Departments, and units within the library to maximize support and increase visibility of the collections.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: ALA accredited MLS or Masters in Archival Studies, and an advanced degree in a relevant subject area or a substantial record of research and scholarship.  Demonstrated experience in Special Collections and Archives.  Superior leadership skills.  Ability to articulate a vision for Special Collections, set priorities, organizational goals, and introduce and manage change in the Department.  Demonstrated management and supervision experience with success in leading, guiding, and fostering a dynamic workplace environment.  Strong success in building outstanding special collections with proven experience in collection development.  Demonstrated working knowledge of the rare book and manuscripts trade.  Familiarity with the principles and methods of conservation, preservation, and security of materials.  Experience working with Curators, technical services and digital processing.

Understanding of emerging technologies, key issues and trends in archives and special collections.  Excellent analytical, creative problem solving skills, and ability to exercise sound judgment.  Budget and resource allocations experience.  Strong commitment to excellence in public service.  Commitment to serving diverse users including faculty, students, researchers, community users, visiting scholars, etc.   Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with campus scholars, officials, UC colleagues, dealers, vendors, staff, and library supporters.

Demonstrated success in building, cultivating, and pursuing donor relationships.  Record of achievement in fundraising, writing and obtaining grants, gifts and awards.  Ability and willingness to organize, publicize, and promote a variety of events for the Department of Special Research Collections.  Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.  Record of active and continuous participation in professional associations.

Preferred:  Knowledge of copyright law.  Certification by the Academy of Certified Archivists.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.  Librarians at the University of California, Santa Barbara are professional academic appointees who accrue vacation at the rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per month.  The University has an excellent retirement system which is coordinated with Social Security.  A selection of group health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans are offered by the University.

The Benson Latin American Collection

The Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/benson/), a unit of the University of Texas Libraries (http://www.lib.utexas.edu/)is one of the premiere libraries in the world focused on Latin America and Latino Studies. In partnership with the Teresa Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies (LLILAS) (http://www.utexas.edu/cola/insts/llilas/), the Benson Collection is a regular destination for visitors from throughout the world. The Benson Collection is a specialized research library focusing on materials from and about Latin America, and materials relating to Latinos in the United States.

 

The Benson Collection is continually enriched by a vigorous acquisitions program and by a growing collection of original digital resources available online. The Benson Collection contains over 970,000 books, periodicals, and pamphlets and microforms, 4,000 linear feet of manuscripts, 19,000 maps, 11,500 broadsides, 90,500 photographs, and 50,000 items in a variety of other media. The Rare Books and Manuscripts division is one of four UT Austin sites with extensive holdings of rare materials—from the “first books” published in the Americas in sixteenth-century Mexico, to the personal libraries and papers of key figures in the contemporary history of Latin and Latino/a America.  The Collection annually hosts hundreds of scholars from the United States, Latin American, Europe, and Asia.

 

Since 2011, the Benson Collection has been in formal partnership with LLILAS, now operating collaboratively as LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections under the leadership of a common Director.  The Benson Collection staff is comprised of 6 librarians, 2 archivists, a curator, 8 support staff, student assistants, plus shared staff with LLILAS, including:  a Chief of Staff, Associate Director for Development, Digital Scholarship Coordinator and Grant Writer.

 

Responsibilities:  Reporting to the LILLAS Benson Director, the Associate Director of Scholarly Resources collaborates both with other librarians in the Benson Collection and with other bibliographers in the UT Libraries.

 

The Librarian serves as the lead administrator and head bibliographer for the Benson Collection.  This includes serving as a key member of the leadership team of LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

 

·  Primary administrative responsibility for all Benson Collection departments, including Rare Books and Manuscripts, Public Services, Bibliographers, and Digital Scholarship. Provides leadership and vision in strategic planning and implementation. Monitors day-to-day library operations and activities. Works with LLILAS Benson Director, Chief of Staff and Senior Administrative Associate to develop and manage Benson budget, including endowments.

·  Supervises and promotes the professional development of Benson Collection staff. Conducts annual performance reviews. Serves on the LLILAS Benson leadership team. Represents the Benson Collection on the University of Texas Libraries Administrative Council and other committees as appropriate.

·  Sets priorities for Collection growth for both physical and digital collections. Selects materials, acquires books, and reviews and manages approval plans. Provides leadership, professional development and guidance for the Benson bibliographers. Works strategically with the Benson Archivist on rare materials acquisitions. Evaluates gift materials. Prepares and presents relevant collection statistics.

·  Serves as a liaison with UT faculty, visiting scholars, and visitors on development and use of collections.

·  Serves as the Benson Collection's principal contact for library matters. Represents the Benson Collection with the University of Texas Libraries, UT-Austin administration, patrons, donors and other stakeholders. Represents the Benson Collection at events. Represents the Benson Collection at regional, national and international meetings and conferences concerned with Latin American librarianship.

 

RequiredAdvanced professional or academic degree that brings expertise relevant to library operations. Specialization in or thorough knowledge of the history and culture of Latin America/Caribbean. Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Portuguese. Demonstrated experience in collection development and management. Experience supervising and professionally developing staff. Experience managing budgets. Sufficient experience and expertise to be able to lead and supervise a staff increasingly oriented toward digital scholarship and to provide leadership in decision-making and strategic planning necessary for expanding an outstanding collection of rare archival materials.
