iSchool Inclusion Institute (i3)

Undergraduate internship & research opportunity for underrepresented students of all majors

Rolling admissions until April 11, 2014

Program Overview & Dates

The iSchool Inclusion Institute (i3) is an undergraduate internship and research program that prepares students from underrepresented populations for graduate study and careers in the information sciences. Students undertake a year-long experience that includes two summer institutes held at the University of Pittsburgh and a year-long team research project. Students are immersed in special-topics workshops, professional development seminars, research projects, and network-building opportunities.

The 2014 i3 will be held at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Information Sciences from June 1-27, 2014.

How Does My Major Fit In The Information Sciences?

The information sciences focus on PEOPLE, INFORMATION, & TECHNOLOGY--with a heavy emphasis on people. If you like finding creative ways to solve problems and help people, there's an iSchool graduate program waiting for you.

Information scientists come from a variety of academic backgrounds and range in their technical abilities. You don't need to be a programmer or a coder to be in this field (although we're always happy to have our tech people, too)! All you need is an interest in how people use and interact with information and technology to solve problems in their lives. If you want to know more about self-driving cars, how pop culture develops online, or how to reduce cyber-bullying among teens, the information sciences are the place for you. The same goes for artificial intelligence, digital libraries, public policy and government management, entrepreneurship, and so many other areas.

Check out our i3 FAQ sheet (link above) to see how undergraduate majors map to graduate programs and research opportunities in the information sciences.
