Kate Marek appointed Dean of Dominican GSLIS

GSLIS welcomes Kate Marek's appointment to the position of Dean. Marek is a professor in the school, and had been appointed interim dean effective July 15, 2013. Marek earned her BA from the University of Texas at Austin, her MLIS from Dominican University and her PhD from Emporia State University. She worked in a variety of library settings before beginning her teaching career at Dominican in 1999. Her recent publications include Using Web Analytics in the Library (2011) and Organizational Storytelling for Librarians: Using Stories for Effective Leadership (2010).
            Marek has been involved with online teaching and research in online pedagogy since 2006 and continues to be active in the expansion of the GSLIS technology curriculum as well as with university online and blended teaching development. She was named the first Dominican University Borra Technology Fellow in 2011, a program which supports research in the uses of technology in face-to-face and online courses. Her academic areas of interest include information policy, technology developments in information services, and the evolving needs of the LIS curriculum

 

Dominican GSLIS doctoral program director named; applications open for fall 2014 cohort

GSLIS welcomes Dr. Karen Brown's appointment as director of Dominican University GSLIS's doctoral program, effective January 1, 2014. Brown is a professor in the school, and teaches in the areas of literacy and learning, foundations of the profession, and collection management. She is the University’s 2002 recipient of the Follett Excellence in Teaching Award, and the 2005 Library Administration and Management Association’s Outstanding Researchers Award (with Kate Marek). Prior to joining Dominican University’s faculty in 2000, she developed and coordinated continuing education programs for the Chicago Library System, one of Illinois’ former regional library systems. She has also held positions focusing on management, collection development, reference, and instruction at the University of Wisconsin, University of Maryland, Columbia University, and Bard College. She holds a PhD in media ecology from New York University and Master’s degrees in library science and adult education from the University of Wisconsin. Elizabeth Zak, PhD '13 appointed editor of World Libraries

World Libraries, an international, free, peer-reviewed library and information science journal, welcomes Elizabeth Zak as editor, effective with volume 21. Zak teaches in Dominican's undergraduate seminar program and is assistant peer review manager for the Journal of Chemical Physics. She holds an MA in liberal studies from DePaul University and a BA in journalism from Columbia College Chicago, and earned her PhD from Dominican in 2013 with her dissertation "Do You Believe in Magic? Exploring the Conceptualization of Augmented Reality and its Implications for the User in the Field of Library and Information Science.” World Libraries is a unique, international, free, peer-reviewed library and information science journal founded in 1990 (originally titled Third World Libraries).
