OIT invites you to attend a technical talk on “Mathematica 9 in Education and Research.” The presenter, Troy Schaudt from Wolfram, Inc., will illustrate the capabilities in Mathematica 9 and other Wolfram technologies that are directly applicable for use in teaching and research on the UTK campus. Topics of this technical talk include:
* Predictive Interface
* Free-form linguistic input
* 2D and 3D visualization
* Dynamic interactivity & On-demand scientific data
* Example-driven course materials
* Symbolic interface construction
* Digital Image Processing, Parallelization, and Control Systems functionality
Current Mathematica users will benefit from seeing the many improvements and new features of Mathematica 9<http://www.wolfram.com/mathematica/new-in-9/>. Prior knowledge of Mathematica is not required.

OIT offers a wide range of centrally funded site licenses for
research software, as shown on the OIT site, “Software
Available at Reduced or No Additional Cost<https://oit.utk.edu/hardware-software/software-purchases/Pages/default.aspx>”. These
licenses, however, come with limitations on their use that are
important to understand. Although they can be used for
teaching and internal research, use for the benefit of third
parties, such as government organizations or corporations, is prohibited, except for government organizations that provide federal grants (e.g., NIH and NSF).
Research for outside organizations requires a commercial or consulting license, regardless of the profit/non-profit status of the outside organization.
IBM products, including SPSS, can be used for class projects that help outside organizations, but only those for which the results are available to the general public. That license is separate from UT’s centrally supported SPSS license. For such use, professors must obtain the software for their classes. Research done to improve the functioning of UT requires an administrative license. Software for which we have both academic and administrative licenses include: ArcGIS, QDA Miner, Qualtrics, SPSS and Wordstat. An administrative license is available for SAS products, but you must purchase it separately.
One of the most popular aspects of free and open source software (e.g., R, PSPP, Python, RapidMiner) is that it can be used for any purpose. A free, but not open source, “lite” version of QDA Miner is available<http://provalisresearch.com/products/qualitative-data-analysis-software/freeware/> that you can use for any purpose.

The Faculty First Program was established to assist UTK faculty in their use of technology in teaching. Each year, OIT issues a “Call for Proposal” that invites UTK faculty to apply for a Faculty First grant. OIT awards the winner(s) of the grant a long-term partnership with OIT that will assist in meeting proposed technology-in-teaching goals. OIT assistance may include instructional design, web and multimedia development, video production, and technical assistance.
The 2014 Faculty First Grants were awarded to:
