COE presents summer-break
engineering trip to Nepal
The College of Engineering Global Initiatives program is accepting applications for a summer-break engineering service trip to Nepal for May 7-15, 2014. Students will take part in a construction project of local
community impact, meet the local citizens, and participate in traditional activities. They will also have the opportunity to travel by elephant through the Royal Chitwan National Park.
Application deadline is April 5, 2014.

Icove textbook update will include Harris Matrix
The Harris Matrix, a popular formula used by archaeologists, has been adapted for use in fire investigation, leading it to be included in the latest edition of the textbook
Forensic Fire Scene Reconstruction, by Dr. David J. Icove of the
Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and co-authors John D. DeHaan and Gerald A. Haynes. This is the first time that the matrix has been included in such a textbook for fire forensics.

BMES offers student photo contest and
seminar series
The UT Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) is sponsoring a university-wide science photo contest. Submit original interesting science and technology related images—a mind-blowing structure of a nanoparticle, a funny-looking colony of bacteria,
a self-assembled polymer pattern, etc.—for a chance to win prizes worth $500.
Deadline is May 15, 2014.

ISE student team wins IIE competition
A student team from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) won first place in the
Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) 2014 Logistics and Supply Chain Case Study Competition. Team members Ying Zhang, Leandra Church, and Jinglu Song used optimization techniques to design a supply chain
network for a company to serve consumers in a city.
Zhang and Song are graduate students in the Logistics, Transportation, and Supply Chain Engineering Lab directed by Dr. Mingzhou Jin. Church is an ISE senior. The award will be presented at the annual Industrial and Systems Engineering Conference in Montreal,
Canada, in May, 2014.

UT Libraries present Big Orange STEM Symposium
The
Big Orange STEM Symposium will host a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fair 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 29, in the Hodges Library Galleria.
The event will feature exhibitors and presentations by undergraduate students, professors, and professionals.
The symposium will provide free lunch and giveaways to attendees.

Boyd Venture Fund seeks applications for Spring 2014 grants
For the seventh consecutive semester, the
Boyd Venture Fund is soliciting applications from student-owned companies interested in securing a grant to help grow their businesses. All UT students, regardless of academic discipline or degree program (doctoral, master’s, or undergraduate)
are eligible to apply.
The deadline for application submissions is Monday, March 24.

AccessComputing offers funding for student internships
AccessComputing, a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project, aims to increase the participation of people with disabilities in computing careers. AccessComputing has funding for students with disabilities to participate in summer internships. Students
participate in both research internships as well as non-research internships.

Bradley Harris will speak on "Studying Redox Protein Fusion using Sorase-Mediated Ligation" 9:40-10:50 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, in Room 416 of the Dougherty Engineering Building. Harris is a PhD candidate in the
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, which is presenting the seminar.

SWE conference to include career fair
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) invites engineering students to attend its 2014 Region E Conference and Career and Graduate School Fair March 28-30, at the Inn at Virginia Tech and Skeleton Conference Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The career fair portion will be 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 29. The cost for the Saturday-only package is $40 for SWE members and $45 for non-SWE members. This cost includes access to the career
fair and exhibits, conference workshops, breakfast, and lunch. Students may register for other conference activities for an additional cost.

EF 301— Career Services for Engineers
Planning your class schedule for Fall 2014? Don’t forget to register for EF 301 – Engineering Career Planning!
This class is offered each Spring and Fall semester and is taught 1:25–2:15 p.m. Mondays at Career Services, 100 Dunford Hall. This class is a perfect fit for all Juniors and Seniors and will equip students with the right tools to land that great job. Sophomores
and Graduate Students may also register for the course as well. The class is offered on a 1-hour Satisfactory/No Credit basis and is taught by Career Services Consultant for the College of Engineering, April Gonzalez/Justin Rice. Expect visits from company
representatives, tips and tricks from HR Recruiters, advice on resumes, cover letters, interviewing and salary negotiation and learn the ways you can stand out and get noticed at the job fairs.

The Academic Support Unit (ASU) in Multicultural Student Life supports the academic success of students through a variety of services:
The Tutoring Program provides free tutoring to students in a variety of subject areas including: math, biology, chemistry, and language arts. Appointment tutoring hours are 8:00 a.m.–8:00
p.m. Monday–Thursday; 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Friday; and 2:00–6:00 p.m. Sunday in the Black Cultural Center. Appointments can be made using the GradesFirst software, available through MYUTK. Walk-in tutoring hours for Spring 2014 are 2:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday and
Thursday in the Black Cultural Center and7:00-10:00 p.m. Monday and Wednesday in Clement Hall.

The Book Loan Program allows students to borrow up to two books free of charge. Students must return the borrowed books at the end of the semester. Applications for the Book Loan Program
are at multicultural.utk.edu.
The VOL Success Seminars (VSS) is a series of workshops designed to equip all students with the knowledge and resources to be successful, inside and outside of the classroom, at the University of Tennessee. The Vols Success Seminars will
resume in February of 2014. Students can register in for each workshop at
multicultural.utk.edu or
studentsuccess.utk.edu.
The Final Prep Sessions provide students with a quiet and comfortable environment to study for their final exams. Students have access to tutoring in a variety of subjects. The Black Cultural Center extends its hours in order to accommodate
those students who wish to have additional studying time. Stress relief activities and snacks are also provided for students to aid in their studying. The dates for the Finals Prep Sessions are 10:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m. Monday, April 28, and Tuesday, April 29.
The Student Success Center offers a variety of academic support.
Academic Coaching: A one-one-one meeting with a trained GTA who can help with time management, goal setting, and more. Call 865-976-6641 to make an appointment or stop by 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.
Academic Success Workshops: Spring sessions are going on now. Please have students contact Doug Renalds ([log in to unmask]) with questions.
Supplemental Instruction: Out of class study sessions with trained student SI Leaders. No appointment necessary. Please see the
schedule for details.
Tutoring: Drop in or by appointment sessions available. Tutoring will begin January 21, and students can check the
schedule for details. Please also let students know that more tutoring options may be available through the SSC and to contact us if they are in need of tutoring for a subject not currently
listed on the website.
