“Academic reward systems should ensure that faculty making excellent contributions to scholarship, teaching, and service are retained and advanced. Yet what excellence
looks like in 2013 may differ from what it looked like in 1960 and what it may look like 50 years from now."

International Engagement Research: Geography’s Micheline van Riemsdijk
Dr. Micheline van Riemsdijk of UT’s Department of Geography has established a successful, publicly engaged research partnership with FAFO (the
Institute for Labor and Social Research) in Oslo, Norway. Van Riemsdijk partnered with FAFO to publish her NSF-funded research project, “Governance of International Labor Migration: Scalar Politics and Network Relations,” which was presented at a November
2013 seminar at FAFO. The seminar was attended by various members of the Oslo community and stakeholders who participated in the project, including policymakers, city officials, leaders of immigrant organizations, skilled migrants, union leaders, and HR managers.
The dissemination of the report to the community members, along with their participation in the project, will perhaps influence future policymaking in this arena while also providing feedback that Dr. van Riemsdijk can incorporate into future research.

the perils of driving a car during the Jim Crow era and the navigational strategies that they used to cope with extreme segregation and discrimination. A poster based on the project won an award at the Inaugural Geography Research Symposium on the UTK campus,
