“Academic reward systems should ensure that faculty making excellent contributions to scholarship, teaching, and service are retained and advanced. Yet what excellence looks like in 2013 may differ from what it looked like in 1960 and what it may look like 50 years from now."

-          KerryAnn O'Meara (Inside Higher Ed, January 13, 2014)

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT NEWS

1.      Coming to UT March 13th: KerryAnn O’Meara on Rewarding Engaged Scholarship

Dr. Kerry Ann O’Meara, associate professor of Higher Education at the University of Maryland and a national expert on faculty rewards for engaged scholarship, will share her expertise with the UT community during a talk, “Rewarding Engaged Scholarship in Promotion and Tenure: Strategies for Action.” O’Meara's research examines faculty careers and work environments, academic reward systems and community engagement, and has been widely published, appearing in the Journal of Higher Education, Review of Higher Education, Research in Higher Education Journal, and Handbook for Higher Education Research and others.

Presentation: Thursday, March 13th, 1:00 P.M, Hodges Library Auditorium

2.      Free Inaugural Membership Offered by the new Citizen Science Association

The Citizen Science Association (CSA) is a new organization conceived of as a "community of practice for the field of public participation in scientific research." Organizers invite inaugural members to join free of charge by March 15th and to vote on draft vision and mission statement. Interested individuals are invited to respond to the questionnaire and membership form that are linked below.

Questionnaire: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CSAMemberQuestionnaire

3.      International Engagement Research: Geography’s Micheline van Riemsdijk

Dr. Micheline van Riemsdijk of UT’s Department of Geography has established a successful, publicly engaged research partnership with FAFO (the Institute for Labor and Social Research) in Oslo, Norway. Van Riemsdijk partnered with FAFO to publish her NSF-funded research project, “Governance of International Labor Migration: Scalar Politics and Network Relations,” which was presented at a November 2013 seminar at FAFO. The seminar was attended by various members of the Oslo community and stakeholders who participated in the project, including policymakers, city officials, leaders of immigrant organizations, skilled migrants, union leaders, and HR managers. The dissemination of the report to the community members, along with their participation in the project, will perhaps influence future policymaking in this arena while also providing feedback that Dr. van Riemsdijk can incorporate into future research.

4.      Student Research Partnership with Beck Center Wins Geography Poster Award

Undergraduate student Kortney Williams, co-mentored by Derek Alderman (Geography) and Josh Inwood (Geography/Africana Studies), conducted a research project in partnership with Knoxville’s Beck Cultural Exchange Center in summer and fall 2013.  The Beck Center is An African American museum and conference area in Knoxville.  Ms. Williams collected oral histories from older African Americans about the perils of driving a car during the Jim Crow era and the navigational strategies that they used to cope with extreme segregation and discrimination.  A poster based on the project won an award at the Inaugural Geography Research Symposium on the UTK campus, Feb. 22, 2014.
