“I would like UT to be known for producing social workers who can be useful to vets in all scopes of veterinary practice. I also hope UT will be the go-to place to
find veterinary social workers for helping in the human side of things in veterinary medicine.”

College of Social Work Spotlights Community Engaged Scholarship of Sungkyu Lee and Elizabeth Strand
Sungkyu Lee, an assistant professor, focuses on ethnic and racial disparities in mental health and health service use. Lee, a South Korean
native himself with experience in counselling Asian immigrants with mental illnesses, continues to volunteer in social work settings outside the classroom. He leads monthly group meetings for cancer survivors in Atlanta. Elizabeth Strand, clinical associate
professor and director of Veterinary Social Work Services, uses her joint position in the Colleges of Veterinary Medicine and Social Work to focus on human-animal relationships and human stress. Her work has already had an impact on former students and the
communities they serve: one of Lee’s students plans to incorporate dogs into Nashville’s juvenile justice system; another is now an executive director of an animal-assisted therapy program for people with serious mental illnesses.

NY Times: “Professors, We Need You!”
Is it true that "Ph.D. programs have fostered a culture that glorifies arcane unintelligibility while disdaining impact and audience?" How
do we promote community engaged scholarship in a way that doesn't simply add fire to the anti-intellectualism that already endangers higher education?

Reaching Out to Local Communities: How to engage with local stakeholders for the biggest impact
(Science Network Workshop Series) This online workshop will specifically focus on how scientists can engage with stakeholders to develop their
research in a way that is most relevant and useful to the public. If scientists can incorporate the interests of stakeholders and the public into their research, their work can better inform people’s decisions as well as public policy. This workshop will be
particularly informative for attendees wishing to conduct research with a bearing on societally relevant policy debates. The attendees will leave with lessons learned from case studies of successful stakeholder engagement by the presenters.
Workshop Date: Feb. 27, 3:00PM EST

Ancient Genome Stirs Ethics Debate
This article and video from Nature discuss the ethical concerns centered on the recent sequencing of the Clovis Boy genome by scientists. The
past study of ancient Native American remains by researchers has been contentious. To avoid controversies, Eske Willerslev, the lead paleobiologist on the recent Clovis study, involved Native American communities in order to explain the study, engage the local
population, and garner support. The article provides an interesting case study in community-based participatory research.
