1. College of Communication and Information Highlights Service-Learning Opportunities Offered by Two Faculty
Lisa Fall, associate professor of public relations in the College of Communication and Information, is currently teaching a PR campaigns class in which students are partnering with the Knoxville-based Scarecrow Foundation, a group of citizens and civic leaders helping to end hunger in the United States. Meanwhile, Kenneth Levine, professor of communication studies in the same college, provides an annual study-abroad opportunity for students in France and Belgium. Levine’s program focuses on engaging students with local cultures through intercultural communication.
2. The Public Diplomat Podcast: A Look at the Center for Sport, Peace, and Society
The University of Tennessee’s Center for Sport, Peace, and Society has received accolades as one of the top public diplomacy initiatives in the United States. In this podcast, Dr. Sarah Hillyer and Dr. Ashleigh Huffman of UT discuss the CSPS with hosts Michael Ardaiolo and Adam Cyr.

3. UT Gardens Partners with Boys & Girls Club, Others for “SciGirls” Educator Training Workshop
UT Gardens collaborated with the Boys & Girls Club of Dumplin Valley, ECO-Youth Garden, Project Learning Tree of Tennessee, Sarah Moore Green and the Tennessee Environmental Education Association for Saturday’s workshop.

4. Call for Proposals: 2014 Imagining America conference
The 2014 Imagining America conference is animated by three keywords: Organizing. Culture. Change. These keywords represent concentrations of energy and activity across higher education and within the IA consortium-contested terrains that demand critical discourse and analysis. Institutional and community partners are invited to sharpen our collective understanding of the nature and promise of organizing culture change; to provoke conversation and debate around the many meanings of these keywords; to explore the distinctive contributions that methodologies, concepts, theories, and knowledge from arts, humanities, and design fields make to the work of organizing culture change; and to illuminate how organizing culture change can transform higher education's role in the work of democracy.

5. Call for Proposals: 2014 Canadian Knowledge Mobilization Forum
The 2014 Canadian Knowledge Mobilization Forum is seeking contributions that address the theme, “Putting research to Work.” The forum will examine the results of Knowledge Mobilization activities that lead to social and economic innovation – for individuals, families, communities, businesses, non-profit organizations and international collaborative agencies. Proposals may • Advance our understanding of the production of economic and social innovations • Build capacity for Knowledge Mobilization and continual improvement • Learn about work in other sectors to enable partnerships and collaboration • Engage with leaders to influence future directions • Meet the next generation of leaders and create opportunities to mentor and coach • Access the latest tools, techniques and opportunities.

6. Call for Submissions: Journal of Public Scholarship in Higher Education
The Journal of Public Scholarship in Higher Education aims to advance the status and prospects for publicly engaged teaching and research in the academy by showcasing the new disciplinary and/or pedagogical knowledge generated by engagement with the community. JPSHE provides a venue for higher education faculty and administrative leadership to reflect on the ways that community engagement affects work in higher education – and its outcomes for broad issues such as classroom teaching, the advancement of research and knowledge creation across the disciplines, faculty development, tenure and promotion processes, the preparation of graduate students, etc.
Deadline: March 15, 2014, for consideration in the 2014 volume.

7. Call for Nominations: 2014 Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty
The annual Ernest A. Lynton Award for the Scholarship of Engagement for Early Career Faculty recognizes a faculty member who is pre-tenure at tenure-granting campuses or early career (i.e., within the first six years) at campuses with long-term contracts and who connects his or her teaching, research, and service to community engagement. Eligibility includes full-time faculty who have not submitted tenure materials for review prior to the Lynton Award application deadline.

9. Call for Proposals: Rural Design Proposals
The Citizens’ Institute on Rural Design, a leadership initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, works with rural communities (50,000 or less) to enhance economic vitality and quality of life through design workshops. The CIRD workshop program brings together local nonprofits, civic leaders, and community organizations with a team of specialists in planning, design, and creative placemaking to address local issues. These challenges include strengthening local economies, enhancing rural character, leveraging cultural assets, and designing efficient systems for transportation and housing. Communities selected to participate in the program will receive $7,000 in planning support for hosting a two-day workshop and will be required to provide approximately $7,000 in matching funds. CIRD will work to assemble a group of specialists based on the individual needs of the community.

10. Fisher House Foundation: Newman’s Own Awards to Support Service Members and Their Families
The Fisher House Foundation, a private-public partnership that supports America’s military in times of need, is accepting proposals from nonprofit organizations for the 2014 Newman’s Own Awards. These awards focus on creative ideas to improve the quality of life of service members and their families. Grants of up to $50,000 will be awarded in recognition of innovative ideas to help veterans and active duty, Reserve, and National Guard service members and their families.
