Featured student: Cameron Walker

Cameron WalkerOur student this week is Cameron Walker, a chemical engineering major who accepted a co-op at Hexpol Compounding located in Dyersburg, Tennessee. Walker describes the department he worked in and what his main responsibilities were.

"For this term I worked in the quality control lab whose function was to ensure that all materials, both incoming and outgoing, met all requirements and specifications," he said. "My responsibilities included testing incoming raw materials for various parameters such as water content and specific gravity. I also tested newly produced rubber compounds for certain qualities which included viscosity, specific gravity, and cure time. Finally I assisted in the production and testing of lab batches of rubber compounds, which are small scale versions of various recipes. These are used to adjust the formula of a compound to achieve desired results in a large production run, and minimize the amount of raw materials which are wasted."

Walker found his co-op assignment to be a valuable benefit to his engineering education.

"I would consider the real world experience working in my degree field to be the biggest benefit from my co-op assignment," he said.

Students may read more about their peers' co-op experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking "Resource Library" (on the left margin) and selecting "Students at Work–In Their Own Words." For information on engineering co-op and internships, contact [log in to unmask] or 865-974-5323.
