TITLE:             Consumer Health Outreach Coordinator – Sr. Assistant or Associate Librarian

LOCATION:   Health Sciences Library, NN/LM PNR

THE POSITION

The University of Washington Health Sciences Library (HSL) seeks an innovative librarian with expertise in outreach and consumer health to join the regional office for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR). The mission of the NN/LM PNR is to improve delivery of health information in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington via a regional network of libraries, agencies, and organizations. An underlying focus of this mission is contributing to the elimination of health disparities by improving health information access and health literacy.  NN/LM PNR is funded by a contract from the National Library of Medicine (NLM).

The Consumer Health Outreach Coordinator will promote health literacy skills and access to quality consumer health information in libraries and community organizations to reach populations that are underserved whether due to location, poverty, ethnicity, non-English speaking, or limited literacy.  Duties will also include working with staff in the other seven regional offices of the NN/LM and the National Network Office (NNO) headquartered at the National Library of Medicine. The position responsibilities include frequent travel to conduct site visits and workshops, as well as to exhibit and present at regional and national conferences.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

1.      Develop culturally and linguistically appropriate educational resources to offer in-person and distance training for public libraries, community-based, faith-based, and K-12 organizations that reach underserved audiences and age groups, such as Native American, Hispanic and multi-cultural populations; teens and seniors. 

 

2.      Make site visits to network member organizations and participate in consumer health outreach efforts by network member organizations, providing consultation on collaboration, training resources, or strategies to support health literacy programs in their communities.

 

3.      Foster librarians’ emerging role in consumer health by teaching and sharing information with network members about relevant topics (e.g. health literacy, patient engagement, patient education, Affordable Care Act) via the PNR blog, Twitter, Facebook, and website.

 

4.      Co-coordinate the health literacy and community engagement committee of the Regional Advisory Council (RAC).

 

5.      With the Associate Director, develop, support and monitor awards for consumer health outreach projects by PNR Network member organizations. 

 

6.      Serve as the lead staff in the PNR office for scheduling and hosting NN/LM PNR distance learning continuing education webconference meetings and presentations for network members and priority audiences. 

 

7.      Publicize and provide training on NLM resources such as PubMed and MedlinePlus at association meetings, exhibits and other events as required.

 

8.      Oversee maintenance of training and educational resource content on the NN/LM PNR website.

 

9.      Assist PNR staff in developing and conducting formal surveys, focus groups, and/or interviews related to NN/LM PNR program assessment and development.

 

 

10.  Work with peers at other NN/LM regional offices to share questions, expertise, approaches to problems, materials developed, etc., and seek opportunities to collaborate to strengthen regional programs.

 

11.  Ensure resources included on the NN/LM PNR website are compliant with requirements in Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

 

12.  Assume other responsibilities as assigned; performs other duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

·        Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.

·        Three years experience in an academic, health sciences or consumer health environment.

·        Strong interpersonal skills.

·        Demonstrated experience with designing programs to achieve health literacy or library outreach goals.

·        Effective teaching skills incorporating knowledge of adult learning theory and principles.

·        Demonstrated experience with web conferencing and online instruction platforms.

·        Familiarity with NLM and NN/LM products and services.

·        Excellent oral and written communication skills.

·        Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative and collegial team environment.

·        Excellent organizational, time, and project management skills.

·        Demonstrated ability to thrive in an environment characterized by ambiguity, change, and occasionally competing agendas.

·        Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.

·        Valid driver's license and frequent travel required.

 

Preferred:

·        Coursework in medical librarianship.

·        Experience working in and leading team-based initiatives.

·        Experience with one or more content management systems, blog software, and web page editing packages. 

 

SALARY:        $52,000 minimum.  Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.

 

Position is funded under contract with the National Library of Medicine.

BENEFITS:     Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis.  Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year.  No state or local income tax.
