WORK SCHEDULE: Tue – Wed:  9 am – 2:00; Thur: 9am – 1:00pm; Fr:  1pm – 6:00pm; Sat 10:00am – 4:00pm

JOB OBJECTIVE: The Reference Librarian provides coverage for set hours during the week, Friday evenings and Saturdays at the Hardin Valley library. Participates in reference service, creation of tutorials, bibliographic instruction and other duties as assigned.  This position reports to the Director of Library Services. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

65%  A.  Provide individual reference service and group bibliographic instruction as scheduled through               a variety of means: reference desk service, phone/chat reference services, and information                                literacy class instruction. Design tutorials and subject guides using various applications,                                             including PowerPoint, Camtasia, Relay, Snagit, libguides and related software.

30%  B.  Partcipate in the ongoing development and maintenance of the library’s web services, including the library homepage, mobile websites, LibGuides, online tutorials, and social media presence (blog, facebook, twitter, YouTube). Seek out and implement appropriate emerging technologies.

5%  C.     Maintains knowledge of current professional library practices including national cataloging and metadata standards, potential software tools, and best practices.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

A. Perform other duties and special projects as needed.

 

JOB STANDARDS:

A.     MLS Degree from an ALA-accredited college or university.

B.     Knowledgeable in providing reference services to students, faculty, staff and community members.

C.     Knowledgeable in use of current web authoring tools and standards.

D.    Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills required.

E.     Ability to drive to other PSCC campus sites to deliver library services.

CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE/EXPERIENCE:

A.  Knowledge of the library’s reference and instruction function, including knowledge of specialized searching skills and strategies, familiarity with a library’s print and electronic collections, and ability to translate those resources effectively to students, faculty and staff, and other patrons in a variety of delivery modes, including in person, in class, via tutorials, virtual reference, and graded course components.

B.     Willingness and social skills necessary to work effectively with students, faculty and other
patrons of varying skill and interest levels.

C.     Tolerance for producing highly detailed work.

D.    Ability to design and deliver instruction in the use of library resources in individual and group settings and for placement on library website, in campus course management system, in forms of graded assignments, tutorials, and subject guides.  Ability to participate in blogs and other online social media to deliver updates and information regarding library services and programs.

E.     Proficiency with web and media design tools, software, and systems including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, CMS systems, LibGuides, Camtasia, SnagIt, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office.  Willingness and ability to learn new software and instruct students, faculty and staff on use of software as needed.

JOB LOCATION:

Job location is the college’s Hardin Valley campus on the Pellissippi Parkway in Knoxville, Tennessee.

EQUIPMENT:

Use of pc based and online databases and programs, scanners, phone, photocopier, printers & fax machines and overhead projection equipment is required.
