One of my worst experiences as a doctoral student was sitting in the poster show at ALISE (I think it was 1998 but I may be a year or two off) . I was put in a bad corner and few people bothered to bring their desserts by to see me, but those that did were dismissive of what I was trying to do. It was about critical social theory, which was nothing important at the time, in ALISE circles at least.  It was a depressing experience, and it was clear that certain schools were coming in with presentations that looked like they had a lot of help (I recall how the UWO presentations looked all so polished and worked up).  That my work would warrant the dissertation award several years later, and I would end up with an  appointment at no less than UWO itself did not occur to me at the time. I felt pretty marginalized, but my spirits were picked up a bit later at the ALISE hospitality suite, which I  recall was hosted by folks at the University of Kentucky.

So if you are going to be a judge, take a second look at what may seem marginal  and do keep that Kentucky spirit alive after hours!

Dear Colleagues,

We need a few more volunteers to judge the Jean Tague-Sutcliffe doctoral student poster competition during the ALISE conference in Philadelphia. Volunteers must be available on Wednesday, January 22 from 3:30 to 6:30 pm.  We will have a half hour organizational meeting from 3:30-4:00, and then the judging will take place from 4-6:30 pm.

Please check the conference schedule before you volunteer. There are several sessions on Wednesday afternoon. Anyone who's presenting in the late time slot will not be available to judge.  Not everyone will be needed for the second round of judging.

Please email Susan Davis or Athena Salaba by January 6 if you are willing and able to judge the doctoral student posters.  Please include your institution and your research interests so we can avoid conflicts and match you with appropriate posters when possible.

This is a great (and enjoyable!) opportunity to support our doctoral students and learn about many current research projects.

Thank you!
