With the University's commitment to providing the best in emerging technologies, SMART Boards and Turning Point Clickers (i.e., personal response systems) are becoming more and more prevalent in UT classrooms. Instructors are learning that by using these technologies, they can markedly improve student engagement.

Do you know how to use SMART Boards and Turning Point Clickers for your instructional purposes? If not, please make plans to register for SMART Board / Sympodium 1<https://workshop.utk.edu/workshopinfo.php?workshop=57> and Turning Point Clickers 1<https://workshop.utk.edu/workshopinfo.php?workshop=62>. Register for workshops this week, or request a one-on-one appointment. [https://itc2.utk.edu/newsletter_monthly/2014_01/clicker.jpg]

________________________________

Are you teaching in a classroom that has projection capability and wondering if you have what you need to connect your laptop to display your course content? Classrooms with projection capability currently support VGA display connections and some newer rooms also support HDMI connections. For newer laptops, especially the slim-line computers such as Apple’s MacBook Air or Dell’s Inspiron series, a VGA adapter (HDMI-to-VGA, mini-display port-to-VGA, or a VGA-to-USB) is required to connect to the equipment in these classrooms. These adapters are sometimes provided with the laptop at purchase; if not, VolTECH (formerly known as the UT Bookstore/Technology Center) has them available for purchase.

OIT offers training for faculty using the SMART Board / Sympodium technologies. You can register for SMART Board / Sympodium 1<https://workshop.utk.edu/workshopinfo.php?workshop=57>, or for assistance beyond the advertised workshops, you can request an appointment for training through the OIT Helpdesk by calling (865) 974-9900.

Learn about high performance procedures

The use of the term "Big Data" has increased recently in several academic fields due to the exponential growth and availability of data collection methods that result in large databases full of information. Often, however, the real issue is not that people are now able to accumulate large datasets, but what to do with the data after its collection. Fortunately, with SAS High Performance Analytics (released in SAS version 9.4), there are specific procedures designed to help model large datasets.

SAS/STAT high performance procedures provide predictive modeling tools that were specifically developed to take advantage of parallel processing in both multi-threaded single-machine and distributed multi-machine modes. This improvement provides extremely fast and efficient processing and modeling of large datasets. High performance modeling methods included in SAS can be used for regression, logistic regression, the generalized linear model, linear mixed models, nonlinear models, and decision trees. In addition, the High Performance procedures in SAS are specified in a manner very similar to traditional modeling procedures. This similarity makes for an easy transition to the high performance architecture for large datasets.

OIT's Research Computing Support group can now help you utilize the SAS High Performance Analytics procedures. For free assistance, contact the OIT HelpDesk at 974-9900 or stop by our walk-in area in Greve 517.

Express Yourself! Wikis, Blogs, and Discussion Forums

Are you uncertain about choosing tools for online course activities that involve communication and collaboration? How will you communicate with your students, and how will your students communicate with you and with each other? Wikis, blogs, and discussion boards are great communication and collaboration tools, but it's important to choose tools according to the pedagogical goals you intend to achieve. For example, do you intend to have your students debate and discuss, reflect and review, or collaborate and synthesize? This session will feature two faculty presenters to guide the discussion.

As we kick off the Spring 2014 IT Community of Practice (ITCoP), OIT invites UTK faculty to bring "brown bag" lunches and join this sure-to-be-lively discussion on January 29, 2014 in the John C. Hodges Library Commons Practice Presentation Room (220E) from 11:30am - 12:30pm.

Visit the ITCoP website<https://oit.utk.edu/instructional/development/itcop/Pages/default.aspx> to view a list of monthly presentations this Spring and recordings from Fall 2013.

SPSS users can quickly get hands-on examples of how to run a variety of statistical methods and how to interpret the results using the application's "Case Studies" feature. After starting SPSS, select "HELP" from the menu bar and then choose "Case Studies" from the drop-down menu. "Case Studies" will appear in your web browser with a table of contents on the left and chapter contents in the right-hand pane. Choose topics from the table and follow examples in the content pane.

From the SPSS "Help" menu, you can also choose the "Statistics Coach," a web-based guide to finding the appropriate statistical procedure to answer a particular question. For those who use SPSS command syntax, the "Command Syntax Reference" is available in PDF format from the "Help" menu.
