1.      Farm Bill Agreement Produces Major Victories for Both the Public & Public Research Universities

After years of effort, the Senate and House reached a bipartisan agreement on a new Farm Bill that will enable public research universities to continue and expand their cutting-edge research in a broad array of areas that impact the lives of each American every day.

2.      University of Tennessee's Workshop for Teachers of Social Studies Returns

After a four-year hiatus, university historians, local teachers, and the East Tennessee Historical Society will come together for the thirty-third Workshop for Teachers of Social Studies. The workshop will feature lectures on topics of interest for social studies teachers, including four sessions on teaching history from UT history professors and a luncheon with keynote speaker Patrick Allitt, the Cahoon Family Professor of American History at Emory University. The event will be held at the East Tennessee Historical Society in Knoxville. Registration is $20.

3.      UT Students Present "Leadershops" on Civic Engagement, Social Justice, and More

University of Tennessee Leadership and Service Ambassadors present leadership and service programs for fellow UT students throughout the semester on a variety of topics pertinent to student leadership. Spring semester 2014 workshop topics include goal setting and time management, ethical leadership, conflict management, and civic engagement. The programs will feature both lectures and group activities. Registration closes 48 hours before the scheduled time of each event. 4.      Call for Proposals:  NASPA Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Conference (CLDE)

Early registration and a call for proposals are both now open for student affairs educators.  The 2014 NASPA CLDE Conference, to be held June 12-14 in Miami, Florida,  is a professional development opportunity to educate participants about the civic learning initiatives championed by the field of student affairs. Designed for those new to civic engagement roles as well as seasoned scholars and practitioners, NASPA CLDE seeks proposals that effectively link student affairs practice to the values of civic learning and democratic engagement.  Presenters will be asked to identify the intended audience for their session; beginner, intermediate and advanced. Additionally, the conference planners seeks programs based upon the conference themes, including Assessment of Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement, Developing Community Partnerships, Engaging Diverse Students, Partnering with Academic Affairs, and Promising Practices in Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement.

5.      Free Webinar: Innovation to Impact: The Importance of a Strategic Framework to Support Growth

Presenter Lakshmi Karan, Ph.D, serves as Senior Advisor, Global Strategies and Impact Assessment at The Hero Group.  Most recently, Karan was the Global Strategy Director at Riders for Health, an award winning social enterprise that delivers transportation solutions to millions in Africa. Previously she was the Skoll Foundation's Director of Impact Assessment and Learning, where she guided program strategy, development and evaluation of investments totaling $100M+. Lakshmi has also advised global non-profits and corporations, and was a technologist and business consultant to Fortune 500 companies.

6.      Call for Proposals: Engagement Scholarship Consortium Conference

The 2014 Engagement Scholarship Consortium Conference is seeking proposals for posters and presentations that inform research on engaged scholarship and community-university partnerships. Proposals may feature researching findings, program design, partnership models, community/institutional impacts, service-learning models, and a variety of other subjects. Applicants should explain the relationship between their topic and the conference theme/sub-themes in their proposals. Submissions from faculty, community partners, students, and administrators are welcome.

7.      Call for Proposals: Research Justice Symposium on Community Engaged Scholarship

The symposium, to be held at the University of California, Berkeley, will feature conversations about community-university partnerships through community engaged scholarship, and particularly how this scholarship can promote social justice. The American Cultures Engaged Scholarship program and the DataCenter welcome proposals l questions/topics that focus on ways in which community engaged scholarship can challenge the dominant research paradigm, how community engaged scholarship can contribute to strengthening the social justice movement, models of community engagement in the undergraduate curriculum, and others.

8.      Call For Proposals: 2015 Scholarship of Teaching and Engagement Conference

The International Higher Education Teaching and Learning Association and Utah Valley University's Faculty Center for Teaching Excellence invite proposals for the 2015 Scholarship of Teaching and Engagement Conference. The conference theme is "Reaching the Summit: Explorations in Meaningful Learning through Community Engagement."  The conference will focus on enhancing and transforming teaching and learning through meaningful community engagement and will offer opportunities to interact with community engagement colleagues from around the world, offering  perspectives from various disciplines.

9.      Saving Lives At Birth: A Grand Challenge for Development

Proposals sought for groundbreaking prevention and treatment approaches that assist women and their newborns in poor, underserved communities across the world. This round of program funding will support interventions that increase primary healthcare access, improve the quality of care as measured by health outcomes, and lead to sustained healthy behavior. The organization will provide seed grants of up to $250,000 for two years and transition-to-scale grants of up to $2 million for four years. Proposals are encouraged from nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, civic groups, regional organizations, and others.

10.  Handbook of Models of Community Engagement Strategies in Higher Education Institutions: Policy and Curriculum Development (December 2013) This handbook is a product of the Public Engagement with Research and Research Engagement with Society (PERARES) project, made up of 26 partners from 17 countries. Partners include Science Shops (small organizations that carry out research, both theoretical and applied, in a wide range of disciplines,) social organizations, and higher education institutions. The project actively involves researchers and community organizations to articulate research questions which can then be put on the research agendas of the partnering bodies. This report focuses particularly on policy and curriculum development issues within university based Science Shops. (h/t CESPartnership on Facebook)
