1.      Panel Discussion: Civil Rights Today: The Evolution of Activism

Knoxville-area leaders will join in a panel discussion in honor and remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Panelists include Gordon Bonnyman (Tennessee Justice Center), Avon Rollins (Beck Cultural Exchange Center), Cassie Watters (United Campus Workers), and Estefania Chavez (UT College of Law). Pizza will be served. This event, co-sponsored by the UT Commission for Blacks and the UT College of Law Committee on Community, is free and open to the public.

2.      Community Schools Panel Live at UT: The Promise of Universities in School Reform

Join us live at UT's Baker Center for this national webcast, featuring UT’s Robert Kronick, Director of University-Assisted Community Schools.  Joining Kronick are Ira Harkavy (Barbara and Edward Netter Center for Community Partnerships - University of Pennsylvania); Henry Taylor (Center for Urban Studies, University of Buffalo); and Mary Walsh (Boston College Center for Optimized Student Support). The event is co-sponsored by the Anchor Institution Task Force, Netter Center for Community Partnerships and Coalition for Community Schools at the Institute for Educational Leadership.

3.      Four Principles for Authentic Partnerships

Community-Campus Partners for Health has updated its Position Statement on Authentic Partnerships. The statement posits that authentic partnerships best exist within a space that includes four elements: 1) Guiding Principles of Partnership, 2) Quality Processes, 3) Meaningful Outcomes and 4) Transformative Experiences.

4.      Call for papers: Serve InDEED, the Tennessee Journal for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement

Submissions may consist of reflective essays, research-based articles, service-learning pedagogy, community building projects, best practices, and volunteerism. Manuscripts will be sent to blind reviewers for consideration. Authors will be ordinarily be notified by editors within 6-8 weeks (acceptance, acceptance with revisions, acceptance for later publication, or not in line with the goals of journal).

5.      Call for Proposals: Tennessee Conference on Volunteerism and Service-Learning

The Tennessee Conference on Volunteerism and Service-Learning aims to increase volunteerism and service throughout Tennessee. Participants are invited to submit proposals for workshops or showcase exhibits. Proposals may address several topics, including community development, social innovation for business/non-profits, K-12 service-learning, program sustainability, and volunteer management. This conference draws service leaders from across Tennessee, including non-profit/volunteer management professionals, service- learning practitioners and students, and government leaders.

6.      Call for Papers: CUVic 2014 Conference, Beyond Engagement: Creating integration, innovation and impact

Submissions are now being accepted for workshops, teaching circles and poster presentations. As universities seek to enhance their potential to contribute to the public good, there is growing effort globally to promote community-university engagement. At the same time communities, organizations and governments seek to leverage the knowledge and resource capacity of universities to address community needs.  CUVIC 2014 is an opportunity to reflect on these efforts and enable community-university innovation and action within the institutional, Indigenous, national and global context. Conference to be held May 20-22, 2014 in Victoria, BC, Canada.  (H/T:  Engagement Scholarship Consortium)

7.      Call for Chapters on Science and Service-Learning: RISE Research, Volume 8

The next RISE Research (Volume 8) focuses on science and service-learning as a multifaceted research-based learning strategy designed to improve academic engagement, civic responsibility, and/or resiliency for students “at-risk” to drop out of school. In addition, science and service-learning is recognized as an effective strategy for motivating students to attend college, plan for STEM careers, and encourage students and adults to collaborate as partners to improve their communities.

8.      Call for Applications: Community-Campus Partnerships for Health Exemplary Partnerships Award

The Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCPH) Annual Award was established in 2002 to highlight the power and potential of community-campus partnerships as a strategy for health equity and social justice. Each year, it recognizes exemplary partnerships between communities and academic institutions that are striving to achieve the systems and policy changes needed to overcome the root causes of health, social, environmental and economic inequalities.

9.      Spencer Foundation Invites Proposals for Education Research Projects

The Spencer Foundation, founded in 1962, is dedicated to the belief that research is necessary in order to improve education. Through its New Civics initiative, the foundation is now accepting proposals that frame critical questions about how education can more effectively contribute to the civic development of young people. Projects designed to improve the understanding of avenues/impediments to civic learning and civic action among young people from underserved communities are of particular interest. Scholars in education, social sciences, and humanities are invited to apply. The program rewards grants of up $350,000, typically over a period of one to four years.

10.  Bringing Theory to Practice Accepting Proposals for Campus Engagement Seminar Grants

The Bringing Theory to Practice Project, established by the Association of American Colleges and Universities, is accepting proposals from universities and colleges in the United States for projects that promote engaged learning, civic engagement, and psychosocial well-being among college students. Seminar grants of up to $1,000 will be awarded to projects that bring together diverse members of campus communities to discuss institutional civic missions.

11.  Ben and Jerry’s Foundation Seeks Proposals for Social and Environmental Justice Projects

The Ben and Jerry’s Foundation supports organizations working to bring social change by addressing societal and environmental problems. One year grants of up to $20,000 will be awarded to grassroots community-organizing groups/partnerships in the United States for further social and environmental justice and support sustainable food systems. Grants may be used to support programming or operations costs.

Available in English and Spanish, these peer-reviewed video clips cover a number of key research concepts in ways that are quick, interesting and accessible to the general public. Developed by a team from Health Research San Diego and its Community Advisory Board.  Topics include “What is a Control Group?” (2 min 7 sec); “What is Random Assignment?” (3 min 1 sec); “Who can participate in research?” (1 min 52 sec); “How is research made safe?” (2 min 35 sec); and “ResearchMatch: Be informed about Studies” (2 min 45 sec).

13.  Now online: New Issue of the Tennessee Journal of Service-Learning and Civic Engagement.

The goals of Serve InDEED, the Tennessee Journal for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement include sharing ideas and/or resources, learning from one another regardless of rank,  position, or type of organization; including students as important contributors to the body of research in service-learning; sharing  reflective experiences which foster dynamic change in beliefs, biases, and judgments in order to move us toward a more peaceful society, and contributing to the growing body of academic research in service-learning, civic engagement and volunteerism.
